About this ebook

Jud the Rat and his friends inhabit a series of phonically-based reading fluency books which are graded in terms of difficulty, and are provided with supporting manuals and implementation materials. The books, manuals and materials form part of Dr Charles Potter’s Reading Fluency Programme, which has been developed to improve reading, writing and spelling abilities based on up to date research and literature, while at the same time being entertaining and enjoyed by children.

This book and the other reading fluency books in the series are designed to be used with repetitive paired reading and with sequential working memory training methods. The materials and methods have been successful with a large number of children of different ages and different cultural backgrounds. Results on the programme have been published internationally, and these publications are available free online.

Dr Charles Potter’s Reading Fluency Programme is evidence-based, and online support is provided to users. It is also helpful to talk to the network of people who have used the programme successfully. If you make contact with me by email I can provide you with further information about the programme. I can also provide you with an illustrated manual to enable effective use of this book in developing reading fluency, as well as with additional materials to support your child’s reading, writing, spelling and learning needs.

    Author’s Note on Copyright

This book is the third book in a series of six intermediate level reading fluency books about Doctor Skunk and his adventures at the beach. The books are graded from easy to more difficult, on the basis of the phonic rules and morphological combinations used in the text.

The books can be set in small or medium-sized print and used as stand-alone reading materials, or simply read for pleasure. They can also be set in large print and used to develop reading, writing and spelling fluency. In addition, the phonic skills embedded in the text of each book can be used to teach spelling rules and sequential writing skills.

I have developed a set of procedures and methods for developing reading, writing and spelling fluency, which are designed to be used with the books in the series. I have also developed other procedures and methods for developing spelling and sequential writing skills, using the material. DOCTOR SKUNK TRIES TO FIND HIS LUNCH

    The story so far:

Edna Rabbit and the rabbit family have gone to the seaside in a bus, driven by Sid the Badger. They are enjoying themselves at the beach, building sandcastles, swimming, and eating ice creams. Soon they will be having a picnic lunch, sitting on deck chairs under the palm trees next to the beach.

Meanwhile back in the village, Jill the Dog is in her shop and Mr and Mrs Lizard are sitting downstairs in their house. Doctor Skunk is sleeping in his armchair in his rooms. The village is quiet, as all the other animals have gone on the bus to the seaside.

Suddenly, however, there is a loud noise as a flock of hens arrive from Farmer Jim’s farm carrying baskets of eggs. Each hen is carrying a large basket of eggs, and in front of the hens is marching a rooster.

"LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT!!" the rooster is shouting.

The hens march down the village street, with the rooster in front. One of the hens, however, cannot march in time. And as she cannot march in time, all the other hens are cackling and clucking and shouting and screaming as they fall over their own feet and one another’s feet and then bump into each other.

And so at this point in the story, the hens have arrived at Jill the Dog’s shop, and this is the terrible noise that Doctor Skunk is hearing, as these hens cackle and shout and scream at each other. Despite the terrible noise, Doctor Skunk is still fast asleep, and he is smiling. It may be that Doctor Skunk is smiling because he is having a nice dream, or it may be that Doctor Skunk is
