here he was, lifeless and without any expression on his face. Collapsed in the woven sisal fiber chair, no one knew whether he was breathing or not. Everyone around him was glued to the weak old man, who was rumored to be over two hundred years old. He had no family or friends, no cows, or other farm animals from which to get milk, eggs, or meat like the rest of us in the community. He however, had a small kitchen garden where he grew tomatoes, collard greens, beans, corn (called maize), and a few herbs. Nobody had ever seen him eat anything; perhaps he was too old to eat anything; some guessed. Most people feared him, some did not know what to make of him; others, though no one ever said it out aloud in public, thought he was an alien. One thing was sure, this day, something strange was going on.
After what looked like centuries, there was some movement from the old man; his weak, long, bony fingers moved ever so slightly. There was a collective sigh from the crowd. Some people screamed in horror. Others disappeared into the bushes in fear. I was taught to be brave and to always help the older members of our society. I was determined to help the weak, lifeless old man. From behind the fear-filled crowd, I started pushing forward toward him. It was not easy. The crowd was not giving way. It was also getting dark and soon; I would need to light an oil lamp to be able to see anything.
I pushed forward, ever so slightly but the crowd pushed me back; for every one step forward, I went back three. The more I failed, the more determined I was to get to the old man. After trying more times than I could count, and pushing some people off my way, I got close to the old man. I could clearly hear his loud breathing, or snoring…or purring? I was as confused as I was lost.
Just then, when I thought things could not get weirder, they just did. As I reached my hand out to grab hold of the old man’s arm, a sheet like layer stopped me short. By this time, it was so dark, I desperately needed a light. I could see the oil lamp lighter at my side. I reached for it with my left arm as my right hand reached urgently for the snoring…or purring old man.
Miraculously, I struck the lighter just as my hand reached the old man’s face. He was very hairy; in fact, he was extremely hairy and had …wait a minute! …..cat like ears and, as my arm reached his back, a very fluffy tail!!! I was
