This book is the first book in a two part series. Each of the books in the series is graded on the basis of the phonic rules and morphological combinations used in the text.
The two books can be used as stand-alone reading materials, or simply read for pleasure. They can also be set in large print and used to develop reading, writing and spelling fluency. In addition, the phonic skills embedded in the text of each book can be used to teach spelling rules and sequential writing skills.
I have developed a set of procedures and methods for developing reading, writing and spelling fluency, which are designed to be used with the books in the series. I have also developed other procedures and methods for developing spelling and sequential writing skills, using the material. Copyright in the text of this book and the other books in the series, as well as the procedures and methods used with this book and the other books in in the series, vests with myself as author.

JUD THE RAT AND MAX THE MOLE
Max the Mole lives in a house on the edge of the park, on the far side of the street. Max lives in a hole under a bush. He has dug the hole deep, so his house is hard to find.
Jud the Rat is one of Max the Mole’s best friends. Jud the Rat knows that if he looks under the bush, he will find what looks like a pile of sand. This is a mole hill, which Max the Mole has made with sand he has dug out from under the ground.
But Jud the Rat also knows that in the mole hill, there is a small door. From the door a tunnel runs deep down under the bush. This is the tunnel which runs down from the bush into Max the Mole’s house under the ground.
So it is difficult for Jud the Rat to know if Max the Mole is at home. The best way to find out is to ring the doorbell. Jud the Rat knows that he then has to wait. If Max the Mole is in the kitchen of his house, he will come to the front door quickly. But if Max the Mole is in the dining room or the sitting room, then it takes longer, as these rooms lie deeper under the ground.
The living room and the bedrooms are really deep underground. Max the Mole gets to these rooms by going down a deeper tunnel which runs from the dining room and sitting room level to another level in his house deep down under the earth. If Max is in
