I’ve been reading MOTHER EARTH NEWS for over 30 years and have subscribed on and off during that time. I keep noticing the editors of my favorite homesteading magazines are getting younger and younger — and I’m encouraged by that. We should all be learning from one another’s experiences. I’m happy to say that I’ll continue to subscribe to your magazine, not only because of content but because of your steadfast commitment. Thank you!

Grid-Tied Solar

I just finished reading “Gone Off-Grid” in the October/November 2023 issue, and I have a small nit to pick.

One thing that was mentioned regarding grid-tied solar photovoltaic systems as an absolute, when it isn’t; Tory said, “Our neighbors have solar panels and batteries, but they lose power during outages.” What Hoss Boyd said in his response was, “A grid-tied solar photovoltaic system shuts down by design during a power outage.” While that may, in fact, be true of some systems, it’s definitely not true of all systems. Or, at best, it’s only partially true.
