Loulou
In a small village, called Kamandou, lived Loulou, a little boy, with his family. Hyperactive and intelligent, he was the joy of his family. At age seven, Loulou enjoyed all kinds of games, even those that did not exist (he invented them). His creative spirit was such that he could make up a story about each of his toys. His favorite time was when his parents took him to visit his grandparents at White Mountain in the countryside. There he felt like a grown-up, and for good reason! A flock of fowl always followed him like his shadow—hens, roosters, guinea fowl, turkeys, ducks, and pigeons, not to mention the beautiful, majestic peacock that was never without three peahens behind him.
At White Mountain, everything seemed magical. It was the continual babbling of the big spring, the trees that stretched out their long arms to enfold you, the birds of all kinds singing songs all day long, back and forth, forever. Loulou’s grandfather, Dieubon Delacroix, a highly respected man, explained that White Mountain
was named after a large colonial home. His grandfather lived up to his name, which means good god
in French. He was not a god, but he was good. At least he was like a god to Grandma.
