The Echo Chamber - E.J. Snow
Chapter 1: Dissonance
The neon glow of Neo Angeles, 2047 technological advancements have blurred the lines between reality and the digital world. Anya's cramped apartment window, a distorted reflection of the city's vibrant chaos. Rain lashed against the aging fire escape with a relentless fury, its rhythmic drumming a monotonous counterpoint to the symphony of clicks and whirs emanating from her cluttered desk. Lines of code scrolled across Anya's monitor, a cryptic language only she could decipher. Her brow furrowed, etching deeper lines into her already weary face. Hours had morphed into a caffeine-fueled blur as she dissected the leaked code snippet. It was unlike anything she'd encountered before – a malicious echo buried within Elysian's core, the city's most popular virtual reality platform.
A ping on her comm unit startled her. A holographic projection flickered to life, revealing Kai Tanaka's sardonic grin. His dark eyes, the only non-augmented part of his face that Anya could see, gleamed with amusement.
Well, Sharma,
he drawled, his voice a digital echo distorted by the comm's compression. Still lost in the labyrinth?
Anya scowled. Not lost, Tanaka. Just... confused.
She slammed her fist on the desk, sending a cascade of empty energy bars tumbling. This code. It doesn't make sense. It's like a glitch... but intentional.
Kai chuckled, the sound laced with a cynical undercurrent. Intentional glitches are a programmer's bread and butter, my dear. Especially when they're used to eploit a system.
Anya narrowed her eyes. Their encounter earlier that week had been far from friendly. He was a ghost in the digital world, a hacker with a reputation for being both brilliant and untrustworthy. But he was also the only other person she'd found who believed her suspicions about Elysian.
Exploit?
she echoed, her voice sharp as she grasped at the thread of his words. You think they're doing something to the users?
Doing something?
Kai leaned forward, his grin turning predatory. Think bigger, Sharma. Think trapped. Think... harvested.
The word hung heavy in the air, a chilling echo of Anya's own growing fears. Memories, unwanted and raw, flickered in her mind - another face, a younger brother with hopeful eyes, swallowed by the digital abyss. She fought them back, focusing on the faint spark of hope flickering in her chest.
If this code is a trap,
Anya pressed, her voice regaining some steadiness, then why leak it?
Kai shrugged, his digital form
