    Angela’s foot tangled on another creeping vine. She caught herself on a tree, but the bark scraped her hand, adding to the scrapes and dirt already there, already on both hands and her right knee where her faded rust bell-bottom corduroys had torn.

    In front of her, Mike kept up his steady stream of not-quite-under-his-breath curses. Angela wanted to curse at him just to shut him up. She was cursing on the inside; she was sick of listening to him and she didn’t need to add her own to the mix.

    She cursed Mike for choosing a stupid direction to hitchhike in, she cursed him for charging ahead and letting branches slap back at her, and she cursed the driver who had dropped them off at the side of a narrow, twisting road and vaguely pointed and said The town’s a coupla miles through the woods that way and booted them out of the car.

    She’d already lifted the guy’s wallet, which made her feel better.

    That didn’t change the fact that they were somewhere deep in the Tennessee woods, with the sun slanting through the thick canopy of leaves. At this pace, they weren’t going to make it to the town by dark, but Angela kept grimly forging on after Mike. He clearly had no idea what else to do, and neither did she.
