The hot breeze tasted of ashy dust as I stripped out of my clothes in the darkness, scanning the area for predators. The Santa Monica Mountains were mostly silent at this time of night. Insects buzzed in the underbrush, and in the distance, down on Highway 1 along the ocean, I heard the whine of a sports car, racing too fast through Malibu, the driver no doubt feeling entitled to go an excessive, reckless speed.
I’d left my own car and hiked into the hills far enough that nobody driving on the twisting canyon road that ran through from Malibu to Highway 101 would catch the dusky flesh of a naked woman in their headlights. That was never safe.
