Chapter one
The Disappearance
Ava's heart raced as she navigated through the bustling streets of the domed city. The sun, a brilliant artificial orb suspended at the zenith of the vast enclosure, bathed the city in perpetual noon. People moved with purpose, their faces set in expressions ranging from determination to the blank stare of the daily grind. Amid this orchestrated chaos, Ava felt a growing sense of unease. Theo, her best friend and confidante, had vanished without a trace.
The day began like any other, with Ava and Theo meeting at their favorite café near the engineering sector where they both worked. But Theo never showed. It wasn't like him to miss their morning ritual without sending a message. When the café's automatic doors slid closed behind her, marking the end of another fruitless wait, Ava's concern deepened. She tapped her communicator, trying once more to reach Theo, but was met with the same automated response: User not available.
Determined to find answers, Ava headed to Theo's residential block. The corridors of the habitat sector were lined with doors that looked identical, each one leading to a life unfolding within the safety of the dome. She stopped before Theo's door, marked 237A, and rang the bell. Silence greeted her, the kind that amplified her worry.
Come on, Theo, where are you?
She muttered under her breath, pressing the communicator against her ear as if willing it to bring forth his voice. Finally, she resorted to the direct approach, overriding the lock with her engineering clearance—a move that would raise eyebrows if noticed by the city's surveillance systems.
The door slid open, revealing Theo's apartment in its usual state of organized chaos. The holographic screens on the walls displayed paused projects and scribbled notes. His items were scattered about, nothing indicating a planned departure. Ava stepped inside, her gaze sweeping the room, searching for anything that might explain his absence.
Theo?
Ava called out, though she knew the apartment was empty. Her voice sounded hollow in the silent space. Moving to his workstation, she scanned the open documents for clues. One screen flickered with the design of a new air filtration system they'd been brainstorming together. Another showed a series of communications between Theo and various city departments—nothing out of the ordinary.
Ava felt a twinge of frustration. Theo's disappearance didn't make sense. He was a vocal critic of the city's administration, always questioning the necessity of the dome's isolation policies and the strict control over information regarding the world outside. But would that lead to his vanishing?
She was about to give up when a small, blinking light caught her eye. Tucked under a pile of schematics, Theo's personal data pad vibrated softly. Ava picked it up, swiping the screen to life. The last entry in his journal was dated two days ago, and her eyes widened as she read the words:
Got a lead on the old-world tech rumors. Can't say much here. If you're reading this, and I'm not around, dig deeper. Look beyond the dome.
Chills ran down Ava's spine. Theo's interest in the world beyond the dome was more than just ideological. He'd been actively seeking information, something Ava knew was strictly monitored and often censored by the city's authorities.
She pocketed the datapad, a resolve hardening within her. If Theo's disappearance was connected to his inquiries, then the truth lay somewhere beyond the confines of their steel sky. She needed to tread carefully, though. Questions about the dome's policies were met with resistance, and those who pushed too hard faced consequences.
Exiting Theo's apartment, Ava made her way to the central archives under the guise of researching a new project. The archives were a labyrinth of information, monitored by the city's AI to ensure compliance with the administration's guidelines. Ava approached the terminal, her fingers hovering over the interface as she considered her next move.
I need access to external environment studies, historical records, pre-dome era,
Ava spoke clearly, the terminal whirring in response.
Access restricted. Please provide clearance level,
the AI's voice was neutral and unyielding.
Ava hesitated. Using her engineering clearance might attract unwanted attention, but her
