Social Activities Management - Eli Jr
Leadership Ethics and Corporate Social Governance
Leadership, though a very widely discussed and studied topic, has recently been introduced in the context of CSR and how it affects the stakeholders and the society at large. Leadership is a process of influence between the leader and those who are the followers and that helps in achieving the aims and objectives. The leaders are the ones who are followed as the ideal persons in society, and they have a responsibility towards the society and its people. So in any action that they take, accountability is a very important aspect for them. They need to understand and also analyze the consequence and the impact of that action. These days, businesses have a very important role to play in the development of society and improvement of the life of the people. This is a process that is not limited within the economic development of society but also a five-dimensional process involving the human development index, and the leaders play a major role in aligning the businesses to this process. So leadership is again a very critical aspect in determining how the businesses affect the society. But this is a relative concept, and a study has found that leadership for economic value is different from leadership for a combined measure of financial, social, and environmental aspects, and the latter is a better position for the society. Now the leaders had a role of the businesses and the effect of business on the society, need to look at the consequences of their actions of their business on the society, and as mentioned earlier, the more responsible ones will have an accountability towards it. Now these leaders, it is a saying often, are the change agents of society and want a positive change in society. So decision is a process with the selection of an alternative that seems to solve a problem.
The leaders need to always take decisions which will benefit the society and not harm it. And again, the type of decisions and the impact of it will vary, and a detailed analysis will require another article, but one of the examples would be the adoption of sustainable practices in the business, and it is very elaborative one. But summing it all, leadership has a long-term effect on society, and the leaders have a responsibility and accountability for their actions towards society. Now it is been argued that the leadership and the behavior of the leader for the business is a reflection of his personal value or values in life, and a comparison between the personal value and the mode of thought in the action for society will give rise to cognitive dissonance. This is the point where we can bring into the aspect of ethics.
Leadership is a complex activity involving the influence of others towards the attainment of a goal. It involves both goal setting and goal achievement while operating within a complex web of situational factors. Leadership often involves followership - the activity of the other group members in implementing the leaders' decisions or realizing their vision. This is an important point in the leadership/followership relationship. The leader/follower relationship is a social influence process located within a social context of some kind. This is important to note because it focuses our attention towards the fact that leadership can be a positive and negative activity.
Leaders are persons who are able to think and act beyond their individual/specialized interests. They are persons who are able to create a vision of a future state and make that vision a reality. This is a very generalized definition but it is, in fact, how leadership is defined in the modern era, i.e. leadership is no longer thought of as an activity reserved for the extraordinary - it is widely held that leadership is an activity that people can do to work towards the betterment of their society. Non-extraordinary people can also lead within their role as parents or members of a community.
This new form of regulation fits well with the notion of leadership ethics as only through the responsibilities of business to be ethical leaders and value-driven will they be able to fulfill their duties to society. Because business and its leaders are part of the institutions that shape society, the actions taken by business often have deep and wide-ranging effects. Corporate social governance is not advocating no profits, rather it is seeking for businesses to attain their profits in an ethical and socially responsible manner by engaging in activities that are good for the society and minimize the adverse effects. This can be performed through various means such as philanthropy, cause-related marketing, creating a conducive workplace, going green, whistleblowing, and etc. By promoting value-driven leadership, it will lead to a better self-regulation of business and will satisfy the rising expectations of society on the role and behavior of business.
Modern global marketplace has increasingly been focusing on the significance of corporate social governance (CSG) as a new form of regulation with the rise of globalization. Businesses that are seeking to serve their own interest, particularly in this shareholder capital and free market-based economies, seem to neglect their role responsibilities towards society. As such, it raised a serious question about the legitimacy of business in society. Having failed to self-regulate, governments are putting pressure on businesses to be more socially responsible and sustainable in areas concerning the well-being of society and the environment. This is important because it is an attempt to preserve the environment and protect workers, consumers, and the public from irresponsible business practices. Failure to do so will result in further government intervention through more regulation and law. Thus, the terms of regulation of business are changing. It is no longer sufficient for businesses to solely rely on rules-based methods of compliance to achieve a structured society; businesses are now being pressured to regulate themselves by doing what is right, regardless of whether it is within the parameters of the law.
Theoretical Foundations Of Business Ethics
Theoretical foundations of business ethics is an important recognition that has emerged over the last thirty years. It reflects the level of maturity that has been reached in the development of the normative side of business studies. This process took several years to gain momentum and to say that business ethics has normative status when compared with positive social science or the administration sciences would still be contentious for some. The majority of stakeholders in this debate acknowledge that business ethics has a normative dimension. This consensus is adequate to warrant the articulation and exploration of the theoretical basis of business ethics. Businesses operate in a socially and politically intense climate.
Activities of business have implications for the way communities develop themselves and evolve. In each society, the businesses present may influence the political climate and the extent to which justice and individual rights are respected. A complex some argue that businesses are essentially minimalist economic institutions and that they are obliged to perform their duties of social responsibility to the maximum extent this is due to the concept of voluntary societal expectations becoming mixed with moral and social obligations. Whether an enterprise decision maker or employee has a conscience or embraces values and morality, the surrounding culture will influence what is to be deemed as acceptable or unacceptable behavior.
The more the rights, duty and justice culture of a society is developed, there will be the intent by some to actively define and teach business ethics, in an attempt to form an enlightened and principled self-regulatory industry. All these views and assumptions about business take for granted that business ethics is something more than just a compliance with law and that there is a duty for business to do more than this for the sake of a better society. If business ethics has importance beyond legal constraints then this suggests that businesses have a moral duty.
Business ethics is a form of applied philosophy that examines the principles and conduct of business and seeks to determine the nature of business decisions, to ascertain the right or correct decision, policy or practice, and to produce the manner in which this is best achieved. The many cases of misconduct in business,
