    Prologue

What you are suggesting is beyond wrong, the Builder said, glaring. We are not monsters. We allowed the people free will because the people are wise enough to govern themselves. They need not worship us. We’ll be here anyway.

Quite right, the Warrior said. Our task is to protect our people and their worlds. We shouldn’t demand peoples’ worship just because we crafted them.

The Dark One eyed them as the torches blazed amidst the seats of the gods.

His red eyes contrasted their blue and green ones.

I have fought many wars, he said, and defended the cosmos and our people from all the darkness that seeks to snuff out the light. My soul has turned black and dark because of these wars. You, you light gods, and you, brother, the Light One, you craft, you build, you grow. I fight and slay. And that demands a cost, a cost upon my spirit. All I ask, is that our people are grateful for my task. I will not stop fighting these wars. Someone needs to fight them. But the cost has grown too great to bear, without anyone knowing what I go through to defend them.

    The gods regarded him silently.

Dark One, the Mother said, we understand your pain, and we are grateful for the sacrifices you have made to ensure the safety of the cosmos and our people. I understand the wounds the wars you had to fight have dealt you. But you cannot seek worship. Being a god is not about being prayed to. It is about caring for those who cannot care for themselves.

I’m not asking for grand praise, your worship, the Dark One replied. I just want recognition. How do you think it would feel to do this, to turn so dark and lose such a part of your soul, and then see the people you lost so much for to keep safe thank not you, but some other false god, that isn’t even real? I am suggesting we send this army just to this planet. We can send word of the events to the other worlds. This army is not a crusading force, but proof that we are real, and that the false gods are not. Once people realize that I and all of you are true, we can recall the army.

That is out of the question, the Builder said. We will not send our forces to threaten our people whom we have sworn to guard.

The Dark One eyed him menacingly.

Then you leave me no choice, he said.

Brother, the Light One said, his voice grim and weary.

I command our armies, the Dark One went on. I do not require your leave to deploy them. I will deploy them, and you will thank me.

The Builder rose, and so the rest of the gods stood as well.

No! the Builder yelled. I see there is no changing your mind. For that, I am regretful.

He turned to the Light One.

I am sorry, but your brother is not worthy of a god’s power.

The Builder turned back to the Dark One.

By the power granted by the energies, I hereby cast you out.

The Dark One’s eyes began to flicker, and his dark cloak disintegrated.

I deprive you of your powers! Of your connection to our people! I condemn you to a life of purgatory!

We concur! the Light One shouted, voice full of regret, with the other gods.

The Dark One’s spell-forged Netherite armor fell away, revealing his black and wispy form.

His two red eyes stared at the Builder.

A light began to shine through him.

I sentence you to the shadows! the Builder yelled.

The light grew so bright it shone around the Dark One, while he stood there, uttering not a word.

The silence was so profound it made the Light One uneasy.

Then the light engulfed his brother, and when it faded, nothing was left but a coin upon which was embossed the Dark One holding his sword. It was the likeness with which their people carved altars to him.

The Light One turned to the Builder.

I am sorry, the Builder told him. But the threat your brother posed would have been too great for any of us to contend with if he followed this path. And now you must fight the wars that your brother once did. But, for the good of all, do not let the darkness turn your soul. Your brother was a good spirit, but he was too weak to fight the dark side.

I fear he is too powerful, the Light One thought, but he just nodded.

Chapter 1: Battle with the Dark

Fire raced from the Ender dragon, tearing craters and setting the ground alight.

    Stand your ground! Steve shouted.

Through the fires, the Ender dragon raced toward them, carrying the Dark One closer.

Then everyone glimpsed forms running behind the flames. It was too dark to tell what the forms were, at first, but then Steve realized they were seeing withers and zoglins, and skeletons and ghasts.

A round of fire struck the ground, and a new crater sprouted nearby.

Steve stopped an arrow from one of the skeletons with his shield, as the Withers attacked the soldiers.

A great many fell, but most were able to take out their opponents as well.

When Steve saw that the army was dwindling, he ordered the retreat, as the Dark One watched from his Ender dragon, and the beast launched fire..

Fall back! he shouted. Make for Heroes’ Realm!

At once, the army began pouring out of the archway. Steve ran among them.

Sometimes, a Wither appeared beside him, but he slew them all and kept running.

The dragon’s shrill shriek made Steve wince, and a round of fire crashed beside him. He did not stop to look, and kept running.

Moments later, he and the remainder of the army were running across the grounds where the Disciple had kept the super Wither. The mobs chased the army to the wall, and the army began climbing up, but the Dark One and his Ender dragon remained hidden.

Soon, Steve, Sam, Jon, Herobrine, and the rest of the soldiers were running across the obsidian ground, through the fog, and towards the towers.

    Nothing was pursuing them anymore.

Everyone rushed down the towers. Moments later they ran away from the cliff.

The people of Heroes’ Realm felt worry and surprise as they watched the troops return to the city.

You alright? he asked Sam and Jon when they stood amongst their fellow people.

What was that? Sam yelled. That wasn’t…

I know, Steve said. It’s all very confusing right now. But we’ll get through this. I promise you. Jon, I need you to stay here and look after the city. Sam and Herobrine and I will meet with the council.

They left Jon near the ring of torches and headed to the gateway yard.

When they stepped through the gate, they found the Overworld city of Golden Gate bustling with life. The marketplace sounded most of the clangor, but the rest of the city’s streets were crowded as well.

They started off for the Great Keep, all three thinking about what had happened.

The Dark One had not been a pleasant sight, with his crimson-red eyes, and form blacker than a moonless light.

Yet he had not chased them here.

He is weak, Steve decided. Otherwise, he would have followed them here and kept fighting until they were all slain.

They reached the Great Keep moments later.

The council gathered to hear Steve, Sam, and Herobrine’s report, and listened anxiously.

So, you have seen him? He is here? The Lord Governor asked.

He is, Steve replied. His army is just Withers and skeletons, and other normal things. We can fight those. But he’ll have something worse than that Wither we defeated soon. We have to stop him before that happens.

And how do you suggest we do that? the King asked.

    Steve looked at Sam.

I don’t know, he said, truthfully. My plan was to speak to him. But I fear that cannot happen now.

Is there any other option, besides war and talk? the King asked, as he looked at Herobrine.
