CHAPTER ONE
Matt’s face scraped the green grass harshly. The impact was sure to leave a bruise.
Falling face-first on the ground after entering a portal wasn’t new, but it still hurt a lot. He didn’t have the chance to whine about it, though. There were other parts of his body that ached, like his arms and legs, exhausted from all the battles he’d just fought today. But that wasn’t the end of it. Having escaped the Nether after things in the Bastion Remnant took a turn for the worst—yes worst—he felt a pang of pain in his heart. The young piglin couldn’t even imagine anything worse than the Blaze Advisor managing to steal the crown. No one knows what kind of power he has now; all Matt knew was that they were no match for him. They had failed the prophecy.
Matt had failed the prophecy.
He remembered what Master Fabien had told him before:
The son of the King,
Valiant and strong,
Shall continue the lineage,
And Nether be reborn.
Betrayal awaits,
The friendships bond by fate.
This must be overcome.
If not, destroyed the world becomes.
Power is great.
It will never prosper in the hands of a fake.
But if the hero were to fail,
Evil will prevail.
The pain he felt in his body didn’t even compare to the pain he felt in his heart. He
blamed himself for everything. He blamed himself for letting the crown fall to the ground. He blamed himself for letting the crown roll away. He blamed himself for letting the Blaze Advisor reach for the crown and grab it. If only he’d been a little more careful, a little faster, a little stronger, then maybe he…maybe things would be different.
Matt feels a tap on his back. With his body still glued to the ground, he turns his head around. He saw his father, the Piglin King, look at him with concern. Wrinkles on the corner of his eyes and a slight frown found themselves on the king’s face.
I know that look,
he said simply.
Matt let out a breath. What look?
You’re blaming yourself, aren’t you? Well, I really can’t say much about it, but you’re probably right. It is your fault,
the Piglin King chuckles.
The young piglin blinked. Matt didn’t know what to say. Wow, thanks Dad.
The Piglin King lets out a snort. I’m kidding, kid. It’s not your fault. Besides—
Matt’s father gets cut off when a human figure violently comes out of the Nether Portal, landing nearby Matt. It was Alex; she just managed to get out of the Nether. Matt propped himself up from the ground, watching as Alex coughed and coughed, her face full of dirt and soot. She looks at both Matt and the Piglin King.
So, I got it to blow up,
Alex said with a grin.
The Piglin King looked at Matt and laughed. "We’re going to continue talking about that later, Matt. We’re not finished. Anyway, Alex, I do hope you’re doing okay? Are you hurt?"
Alex stands up animatedly, putting on a brave face and puffing out a large breath of air. No sir, perfectly fine.
Matt looks at the portal. Now we just have to hope that Toki saw that massive explosion. Hopefully, the TNT didn’t destroy the portal over at the Nether, or else…let’s wish Toki’s carrying some flint.
Alex reaches out a hand to Matt, who was now sitting on the ground, to help him stand up. Matt looks at her for a while, but then eventually takes her hand and stands up.
Thanks, Alex.
Don’t mention it.
Alex shrugged.
The Piglin King cleared his throat. I know we have Toki to wait for, but it would be best if we went to the village over there and rest.
He points to the village a fair distance away. If the villagers are kind enough, maybe we can ask them to prepare a little room for us.
Oh, no need. We already do, Dad. The village knows us very well. Although…it would be kind of hard to explain to them what just happened,
Matt replied.
Oh? We already have a house in the Overworld?
Matt’s father asked.
Alex scratched her head. An underground base, more like? The villagers adore us three. So…yeah. We don’t have to wait for Toki here; I think he knows what to do when and if he gets here. He’ll probably go to the village.
The Piglin King nodded. Alright, I’ll take your word for it.
With those words, Alex, Matt, and the Piglin King make the short walk to the village up ahead. It was the village that was all too familiar with the two young ones. With slow and tired steps, they eventually reach the village. The village took notice of them immediately and crowded around the two familiar faces and one newcomer. Whispers were heard all around.
Who is that?
It looks like Matt…but older?
That must be his father.
They look tired and bruised. Did they come from the Nether?
What happened?
Alex raises a hand to stop the loud murmurs of the crowd, and they do stop. The crowd quiets down, making way for Alex to explain.
Everyone, meet Matt’s father, the Piglin King,
she says simply.
With that revelation, the village bursts into another scene of whispers, but it was a lot louder this time. They all sounded like a mix of disbelief, excitement, and confusion. One of the villagers in the crowd steps up with a curious look on her face.
Uhm…if you don’t mind me asking…what happened to you guys?
Alex, Matt, and the Piglin King exchanged glances. There was no escaping this now. They had to explain the situation to the village. And they were all kind of nervous about how the villagers would react.
This is gonna be a long discussion. Can we please get some food and clean clothes first?
the Piglin King requests.
The villager who stepped out nodded. Of course. It’s just before sundown. You can tell us everything over dinner.
The villagers escorted the Piglin King, Alex, and Matt to the chapel where their underground base was located. Once they reached the front door, they all dispersed, leaving the two piglins and young human by themselves. Alex was the one who flung the door open and took the ladder down first. Matt followed, motioning his father to do the same. It was a place all too familiar for the two young people. A lot of things have happened in this humble base of theirs.
The Piglin King’s eyes scanned the base. It’s…uh…
It’s nothing like royalty. No gold or fancy beds, but it’s good enough for us,
Alex mentions.
The old piglin probably wasn’t used to simple layouts like these; being the ruler of the Nether for so long and being born into royalty had warped his perception of the real world.
The beds looked cheap and uncomfortable, and the walls had no paint or wallpaper and were just made of stone. Not to mention, they were one bed short. It only had three for Toki, Alex, and Matt, the Piglin King presumed. Where was he going to sleep?
As if reading his mind, Matt speaks. Oh, Alex. We’re missing one bed. Could you craft one?
Alex shrugs. "Sure. I’ll go craft a bed, then we can all wash up and rest. And then
maybe mentally prepare for…whatever we’ll have to say to the villagers at dinner later."
Thank you, Alex.
The Piglin King smiles.
Alex waves her hand in dismissal. It’s no problem King uhhh…King—sorry, what’s your name again?
"It’s only been a moment since I told you my name, and you already
