31 Days to Leadership - Larry Winget
Day One
Definitions of Leadership
To begin, we need to look at just a few of the many definitions of leadership.
A person who leads others along a way; a guide.
—AMERICAN HERITAGE DICTIONARY
The aim of leadership should be to help people and equipment and gadgets to do a better job.
—DR. DEMING
The goal of most leaders is to make people think highly of the leader, but the goal of the outstanding leader is to make people think highly of themselves.
—UNKNOWN
Leadership is inspiring confidence in others.
—GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON
The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.
—HENRY KISSINGER
Leadership is the ability to decide what is to be done and then to get others to want to do it.
—DWIGHT D. EINSENHOWER
Day Two
Take Responsibility
You are responsible. You are responsible for your own style of leadership. You are responsible for your team. You are responsible for results: for the results you and your team have achieved up until now and responsible for the results they will achieve in the future.
You must take responsibility. It doesn’t do any good to point the finger of blame elsewhere, because it’s up to you. You can’t blame circumstances. Things like the economy and your geographic area just don’t matter. You can’t blame your employees. You can’t even blame the company or any policy or procedure. You can’t blame anything or anyone. That is, if you are going to be a successful leader. Leaders take responsibility.
