    Lion's Trip - Summer Cooper

    CHAPTER ONE

Maybe winning the mega-millions in the lottery six months ago wasn’t so great after all, I thought as I blew bits of hair out of my sweating face. I’d finally got up the nerve to cross the ocean to go to Hawaii on holiday and instead I was staring out at waves of heat in a car park in South Africa. As I’ve told a long line of people from the airline; at their desks in the airport and now on the phone, the airport codes were wrong and I was nowhere near where I wanted to be.

Hello? Yes, my name is Cammy Preston, you seem to have sent me to the wrong country. No, I didn’t want to go to South Africa; I wanted to go to Hawaii, I said to the woman on the other end of the phone, which I’d been transferred to when I asked for a supervisor.

May I ask how you booked your flight ma’am? the woman asked me, I can’t remember her name now but she was swiftly rising to the top of my ‘I hope a bird lets go on your head’ list. I knew where her question was leading.

I booked it online through your website, I used airport codes, as requested, and ended up here in South Africa, not Honolulu which I specifically entered after looking up the code, what are you playing at? I was starting to get a little bit huffy.

Did you not notice on the printed ticket that it said ‘South Africa’? Or at the boarding gate? the ever so calm woman asked. Her calmness irked me more.

No, my printed ticket, boarding pass, none of it said ‘South Africa’, it just had the airport codes. I did ask at the boarding gate why the sign said South Africa and I was told I was on the right flight, not to worry. And here I am, sitting in an airport car park, watching the waves of heat rising off of the pavement and all you can do is ask me questions about how this is my fault?

I’m sorry Ms. Preston but there’s nothing we can do, you booked the flight. You are where you requested to go according to the airport codes; I’d suggest you ensure you’ve entered the correct airport code next time. Is there anything else I can help you with today? If I could reach through the phone I might strangle the cheerful woman that sounded as though she were incredibly happy I was in the wrong country.

Looking around once more I saw someone heading towards me, one of those people you sometimes see in international airports handing out flyers for waterparks and such. Trying to turn away, my hand automatically reached out for the paper being shoved at me.

No, I suppose there isn’t much you can do for me. I won’t be flying with your airline anymore, however. I did ask at the boarding gate and was assured I was in the right place. I suppose I asked the wrong question and that’s my fault. Good day. I hung up the phone wondering what I was going to do now. Looking down at the paper I’d been handed I thought I might have an answer, a safari. Hm.

Not something I’d have chosen but looking around at the emptying airport I knew I’d have to at least find somewhere to stay tonight. I wasn’t getting much help from airport staff or the airline, despite the small fortune I’d paid for my airfare; the hotel I had booked in Honolulu was in the process of refunding my money but could be of no help here, and I had nowhere to stay tonight. I dialed the number on the flyer, hoping to at least get a room booked for the night and maybe see some lions and elephants tomorrow in between making phone calls.

Are you Ms. Preston? the gorgeous man in a Land Rover asked me, he was obviously from the group running the safari, the logo on the side of the vehicle said so anyway. He was well over six foot tall with longish blonde hair and hazel eyes that seemed to be delighted to meet me. Most people didn’t look at me that way; maybe he was just happy with the world?

Yes, I am and I am ever so glad to see you, I’m exhausted and I just want food and a bed. Oh, perhaps that sounded suggestive because the tilt to his crooked grin became more pronounced and his eyes danced with laughter. I snickered to myself a little. Exhaustion. The exhaustion was simply starting to get to me. That’s it.

Handing over my bags I watched as the man put them into the vehicle and then settled into the passenger seat. Looking over at him I stuck my hand out and smiled as he introduced himself. I’m Ethan, I’ll be your guide while you’re here. Anything I can do to make your stay a..., he paused and gave me one of those looks, pleasant one, do let me know.

Cheeky sod! Indeed. Such come-ons were unusual for me but I was too tired at the moment to question it too much. Maybe the man just liked fluffy, blonde-haired women? I don’t know; I’d think about it later when it didn’t feel like I could eat a water buffalo and a rhino. And once I had some sleep, hopefully in an air conditioned room. I’d been assured there would be air conditioning but the way the last few hours of travel had gone for me I didn’t expect a whole lot. Have I mentioned the waves of heat yet? Waves of heat aren’t kind to ladies of my size so I hoped this was the part of this debacle, I mean holiday, where matters
