Men have their little black books and flight attendants have their little red diaries. That’s what my colleague Lauren told me when we recently worked together. I’m sure her diaries are a lot more exciting than mine, especially since she’s now dating a handsome billionaire.
My diaries aren’t exactly boring but it’s hard for me to take chances, especially when it comes to love. I’ve been looking for Mr. Right but, so far, all I’ve found is Mr. Right Now. If life is a journey, not a destination, it’s time I enjoyed the ride.
This month, I vow to be less of a wallflower and more of a passionflower. At the very least I’ll have something to remember in my old age.
CHAPTER 1 – Drafted!
I’m not sure why my parents called me after one of the seven deadly sins. I tell people that because I have such an ordinary surname, they wanted me to stand out. Really, though, I think it was in memory of a great aunt I never met – a woman ahead of her time, a real adventurer, some might even say the black sheep of the family. I don’t think I’ve lived up to her reputation so far, although I have been told my raven hair and sapphire blue eyes are almost as striking as my name.
I was walking through the terminal when I heard, Attention, Vanity Smith, flight attendant Vanity Smith, please call crew scheduling immediately.
It’s not often that I’m paged over the airport intercom, so I guessed it must be something important. At first I worried that I was late for my scheduled trip to Boston, but that didn’t depart for two more hours.
I pulled my cell phone from my purse and contacted scheduling. Apparently, another flight attendant had just called in sick, so I had to work her flight to Buenos Aires, which was leaving in 15 minutes. In airline terms, I was drafted.
I should have been excited to spend 60 hours in Argentina, but I wasn’t that thrilled. I’d only packed one change of clothes, expecting to spend 10 hours at a hotel near Logan International. Besides that, I had planned to take my mom to the spa tomorrow for her birthday. She’s been so lonesome since my dad passed away unexpectedly last year. I know what it’s like to feel alone.
But a flight attendant must always be prepared for the unexpected. Even though I’d been flying for two years, since just after my 21st birthday, it was a concept I sometimes forgot. I called my mom and told her not to expect me until Tuesday afternoon. Then, I rebooked our spa appointment for Wednesday morning, just in case I ran into another delay.
I was now practically jogging to the International Departures section of
