    Bearly Witch - Summer Cooper

    CHAPTER ONE

Cally Sholes stubbed her toe on the side table beside her bed as she blindly stumbled out from under the covers. She thought she caught herself, but she was wrong as she suddenly found the floor coming up quickly to give her a nice, hard kiss on the mouth.

She put the thought into action and her face stopped propelling towards the floor, now hovering mere inches from a rude awakening. A little Matrix action to start the day, she thought glumly. Thank God for magic. She blinked and her body pulled itself back up to a standing positon, no arms or elbows needed. If anyone else had seen it they would have soiled themselves, which might have been good for a laugh until she had to explain to them that she was a witch. Or she would just have to erase their memories, but she was not the best with that particular skill set. Her Aunt Edna still had to be reminded who she was every day. But they had set up a nice little reminder system for her, so it had all worked out.

Cally walked downstairs to the kitchen and put on a pot of coffee and set the eggs to begin cooking. She did all this while seated at the kitchen table with a paperback she had been working on. Sometimes being a witch made everything in life a lot easier. She never really had to move to do anything. It was convenient to just wish things into being. If she wished for something she had it; it was really that simple.

It was a gift that had been passed on to her genetically. She did not have to do anything to earn it and that was perfectly fine with her, although there had been a steep learning curve of her gifts. It had not been all fun and games from the get go and she had actually resisted the fact that she was a witch when she first found out about it.

She had turned sixteen when it happened. The day had started as any other, except that she had been wide awake since three in the morning. She was never one to sleep more than four or five hours a night—she just had too much energy, especially at that age—but this night in particular she was wired as could be. She was excited about turning sixteen because she was about to take her driver’s test later that day. She had been staying up all night studying for the past two weeks and she had memorized that stupid book inside and out. She had bugged her dad to take her driving every chance she got and she had worked on the silliness that is parallel parking for hours at a time until she could practically do it blindfolded. Of course if she’d known that her witch powers were about to kick in she wouldn’t have bothered because she could have done it blindfolded. She could have done it blindfolded and standing five hundred yards outside of the vehicle. Somehow she didn’t think that was going to give her bonus points though.

She could pinpoint the exact time that she had discovered her powers. Being unable to sleep and a bundle of energy she decided to go downstairs and watch television. It was dark in the house and she had not wanted to turn on any lights, for fear that it might wake her parents up. Her dad often fell asleep in the chair in his den after dinner. He liked to sit in there and mess around with his model trains and read the sport section of the afternoon newspaper. He had not yet discovered the joys of the online newspaper. Actually to this day he had refused to discover that joy, but he was old. Old people just don’t learn new things easily.

So she had been rushing down the stairs in total darkness, which she had done a thousand times by then. She knew every nuance of every step. She recognized which ones squeaked and which ones creaked and where to step on each step to avoid either. She had not planned on her little brother Billy leaving his stupid skates on the middle step.

The second her foot stepped on the skate she knew she was in trouble as she felt her body begin to fall forward. Her hands missed the rail due to her not expecting this to happen at all. She braced herself for what was no doubt going to be a painful experience with a probably twisted ankle and possibly a dislocated shoulder to add to it.

She wished that she could just fly over the steps and land safely without going through the agony that was about to strike her.

    And she did.

Before she could blink she was standing at the bottom of the steps and the skate she had stepped on was still on the step where she had stepped on it. It had not budged an inch and there had been no noise happening. She had somehow transported from freefalling down the steps to being completely safe at the bottom of the stairs.

How the hell did that happen? Was she asleep? Was this a dream she was having? Maybe she had fallen asleep after all? This defied all the laws of science.

She paced back and forth a few minutes trying to decide what had happened. There was no way that she had avoided a horrible fall down the stairs by just wishing that it didn’t happen. Had she?

Cally decided that she needed to try it again. Not the fall down the stairs though. She decided to try to wish for something with a bit less risk of bodily injury in case the wish decided not to come true.

She walked into the living room and wished for the television to come on. It powered on a second later. She damn near soiled herself right there, but she probably could have wished that away too.

She decided to start experimenting on everything that she could. She wished that breakfast would make itself and the eggs moved out of the fridge, cracked themselves over a hot skillet and began to cook. She was flabbergasted. How was this happening? She had to be dreaming or someone was playing the best sixteenth birthday prank ever. What was going on? How was this possible?

When her family finally woke up she was dying to show them what she had discovered, spending the past few hours experimenting with strange things, wishing for things that kept coming true.

She had actually debated telling her family for fear that they might have her committed somewhere or that the government would get wind of her abilities and lock her up to do experiments on her. Imagine what she could do for them.

To her amazement her family was not surprised to see her newfound abilities. It was then that they told her that their family was descendants of a group of witches who had escaped the Salem witch trials and fled the persecution. She could not believe that they had held this information from her. Apparently it skipped most generations, but occasionally a woman in their family was blessed with that particular gene. She was the only member of her family living with it now though. They had almost thought it was weeded out of existence, but apparently it was just lying dormant waiting to be activated at the right time.

She could not believe her luck. At first the whole thing had been exciting, but then she realized it was scary because she was finding it tough to control. It seemed that every time she wished for something it would come true, even when that was the last thing on her mind.

Getting through the day at school for the first few weeks had been challenging. She would find herself wishing for a teacher to get sick so she didn’t have to take the test she didn’t study for that day. Cally did this off handedly as she was used to doing—as most people are, without thinking—and then the teacher would get sick at lunch and have to go home.

It was a blessing and a curse. When she wanted it the power was there, but she had to make sure to account for the unintended consequences of such power and who else it might affect and how it might affect them. And there were other times when she restrained herself from using the power because she wanted to know she could do something on her own without any supernatural help. If she got asked to the Prom by the captain of the football team who all the girl’s had a crush on and who had just broken up with the head cheerleader… then she wanted it to be because he had wanted to ask her out. But that didn’t happen so she wished for him to ask her out, enjoyed the night as well as being the envy of the school for the last two months of junior year.

But it still felt bad somewhere way down beneath all of the other awesome stuff.

Today was going to be a typical Monday, she presumed. Cally only had about an hour until she was supposed to be at the theatre. The life of a play director was never dull that was for sure but it could be idiotically frustrating, especially on the last day that was scheduled for casting and they still had not found the perfect actor to play the lead in the play.

The play was an original that she had written called Shadows Fall Behind. It was about a billionaire playboy who finally finds true love after being convinced he never would, and it required the lead actor to have a certain quality. It seemed that they had looked at every single guy in the city who was even remotely viable and they had found some guys who were close, but it was just no dice. They needed someone who could portray the bad boy the way he was supposed to be portrayed.

The character had been based on a billionaire playboy, Michael Melton. Michael was one of the most eligible bachelor’s in the city. He had recently published a memoir about his life and in the book he had detailed how tough it had been to really find the perfect lady in his life. Being a rich billionaire who was constantly on the go left little time for a relationship and most women were not able to fulfill that role, or they were just not enough to keep his interest. But he did not say it that eloquently. However, Cally could read between the lines.

She had actually spoken with Michael’s closest associates in preparation for the play. She had wanted to talk to the man himself, but so far he had remained elusive. But she had a feeling that the buzz surrounding the play might get to him. A billionaire was always apt to drop what he was doing to attend a Broadway play about his life.

At least she hoped that was going to happen. She was very tempted to wish this into being, but she did not want to vulgarly use her power to get others to do what she wanted. That was the sort of thing that made her feel really uncomfortable. She did not ever want to use her powers for evil. She had played with this sort of thing in high school, but as she grew up she realized what a horrible thing it was to do to someone, to take their free will from them, and she decided that she would no longer use her powers on people.

After she imbibed several cups of strong black coffee—she had to have her coffee or she was more of a terror than usual—she hopped into her work outfit and left the comforts of her beach house to head to the theatre. It was about a forty-five minute drive, depending on traffic, but that was also one of the reasons she always scheduled the start of the day at ten instead of eight or nine. She hated sitting in traffic and it always put her in a foul mood that she did not want to take out on the actors. Actors were sensitive, temperamental types and you had to handle them just right or they would freeze up and not
