    Tiger Rage - Summer Cooper

    CHAPTER ONE

Gray’s feet pounded against the asphalt as he did his best to drown out the noises around him. Lately, nothing seemed to calm the swells of anger that rose up inside of him each time he was within earshot of his management team. Between his manager, his coach, and the gym owner, Gray was lucky to get even a single second of peace while he trained. All he wanted was to spend some alone time beating a path around the track. He wanted to feel the wind blow across his shaved head. He wanted to feel the muscles in his calves ache from overuse. He wanted to run out of breath while his heart raced in his ears. He would give anything to succumb completely to the joy of adrenaline, but his team made that impossible. Even from across the track, he could still hear them arguing about the future of his career.

He needs to be fighting every night, Tyler argued, his voice fluctuating with each syllable. Gray didn’t need to see his coach’s face to know he was livid.

Each fight costs us, Alan argued. If you want to be the one to front the cash, then fine. Put him in as many fights as you want.

Gray could feel the tension coming off of Tyler as he passed by them, working on his fifth lap around the track. He increased his speed so they wouldn’t try to call him over for his opinion. Lately, both Tyler and Alan loved to pretend to care about his input. In reality, they wanted nothing more than for him to be a mindless body inside the ring. No one truly cared what he wanted so long as he delivered. His voice was ultimately unnecessary if he brought the numbers up. The fact that he wasn’t doing that was the only thing Tyler and Alan were actually able to agree on.

The thought of them, yet again, making decisions for him, fueled Gray’s desire to train. He sprinted the final lap, falling to his knees as soon as he was done. The blood was rushing in his ears. He knew Tyler was standing over him, talking to him about something meaningless, but he didn’t care. Adrenaline was his drug and, in that moment, it was the only thing he could focus on. It was the only thing he cared about. He needed more.

Not now, Tyler, Gray snapped as he got back up to his feet. We can argue later. I’m busy.

Gray… Tyler began, his cheeks already reddening. Shoving his coach to the side, Gray headed towards the punching bags that lined the wall inside the gym.

Leave him be, Gray heard Alan mutter. Tyler retorted, saying something about coddling being half the problem. Alan launched into his avid agreement, but Gray was already wailing on the first bag he could get his hands on. It was Tyler’s face. Then Alan’s. Then his own. It was the face of every opponent he’d ever faced and it was the face of no one at all.

Gray could feel himself losing control as his fists connected with the bag again and again and again. Each impact sent a shock of electricity through his body. He told himself to calm down, to relax, but it was no use. Once he delved this far into himself it was almost impossible to pull back. He couldn’t reign himself in until his body was ready to relinquish control. No matter how hard he tried to keep a clear head, he would pound the bag until it split beneath his knuckles. Gray had been down this road more times than he could count. He knew this routine by heart.

Still, he kept punching. Left. Right. Left again. He spun around the bag, coming at it from behind. He envisioned the last person he fought standing before him, a fist flying fast toward his face. That opponent had beaten him. Badly. The fight had barely begun before it was suddenly ending. Gray found himself lying flat on his back, staring up at the gym’s ceiling, wondering how he’d gotten there. The blow had hit so hard he didn’t remember it. He barely saw it coming before he was out cold. The memory propelled Gray forward once more. He could see that opponent’s smug face as he was named the winner of the fight. With a grunt, Gray connected with the punching bag one last time. He felt it split and a rush of satisfaction coursed through his veins.

Dammit, Alan yelled from behind him. Gray spun around to see the gym owner making his way over to him. What the hell is wrong with you?

What? Gray snapped, turning his attention to the next bag in line.

No. Stop! Alan demanded. He stepped between Gray and the bag; his hands raised. Gray had to force his arm to stop swinging. He didn’t know whether it was the momentum or his anger that made it so hard not to break Alan’s nose.

You want me to win fights? Gray growled. This is how I do it. Now move.

I own this place, kid, Alan roared, taking a step closer to Gray. You don’t give the orders in here.

Gray stared at Alan, his breathing becoming more ragged by the second. He curled his fists into balls so tightly he felt
