Honey
The Lonely
Honey Higgins, a seasoned employee in a mundane office, was lost in a contemplative state. She sat at her desk. Her eyes were glassy and unfocused as the computer screen returned the blank stare. The accounting department was filled with the sounds of typing keyboards and ringing phones, unaware of Honey's questioning thoughts.
It was a common occurrence for many people. Still, for Honey, it was unexpected and triggered by the most mundane of things. Her colleague had just announced their engagement, and while the sight of giant engagement rings was nothing new in the workplace, it was the gender of her colleague's fiancée that had caught Honey's attention. Her colleague was engaged to another woman. It was quite a shock.
Honey had kept her sexuality private throughout her entire career, never wanting to draw attention to herself or become the subject of gossip. In fact, she made it a point to avoid getting involved in the personal lives of her colleagues, not just out of a desire for privacy but also because she had always found them to be somewhat dull and uninteresting.
Despite working in the same office for over two decades, Honey had never come across any other openly gay or lesbian employees. She had always assumed that she was the only one, and over time, Honey grew to believe that her colleagues were simply not as open-minded as she was.
It's possible that her own arrogance had blinded her to the possibility that others might be living a similar lifestyle to her own. Or, it could be that the daily grind of paperwork and deadlines had left her too preoccupied to notice the subtle hints that her colleagues might have dropped about their own orientations.
Regardless of the reason, Honey felt like an idiot now after misjudging her recently engaged coworker as a friendly girl. Maybe If Honey had noticed sooner, things would have been different. She huffed at such a foolish notion. Of course, it wouldn't have been different.
Honey had been single for what seemed like an eternity, and it wasn't a secret to anyone, least of all herself. The harsh fluorescent lights of the office flickered in perfect rhythm with the hazy images that swirled around her mind.
She sat hopelessly at her desk, trying to focus on the endless stream of numbers in front of her, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the tangled mess of memories that consumed her. Her perfectly pressed outfit, a symbol of her professional status, was a stark contrast to the chaos of her thoughts.
She ran a hand through her red hair, which was pulled back tightly by a severe hairband. It was as if she was trying to physically restrain the racing thoughts in her mind. Each memory swirled around like a buffet of emotions, with some bringing back the sweetness of love and others the bitterness of reality. Despite her best efforts, the memories of her past lovers refused to calm down.
Images flickered into place, and the hazy outlines of familiar silhouettes danced across her thoughts. Some of the women had full, supple breasts that moved without being touched, while others required pinching and squeezing. Honey licked her lips.
She could vividly recall the
