      WELL ON her way to becoming something of a New York cliché, Holly Rhodes found herself running out of the publishing office in Madison Avenue a lot later than she had anticipated. Her boss, the typically temperamental Mr. Flintoff, had unexpectedly dropped a barrage of manuscripts on Holly’s desk just as rush hour was kicking off. She would be working late.

      It was close to eleven o’clock when Holly left the building. In this post-Sandy New York, the subways had transformed into living nightmares. At the best of times, one would wait twice as long to get home. At the worst of times – specifically as soon as the sun went away and the moon took up the night shift – it could be several hours. Holly was wise enough, and she was dying to get home as quickly as possible to catch just a few comfortable hours within her bed. She needed to hail a cab.
