To my friend and sister in Christ, Dr. Prophetess Evette Young, for helping me get started in my deliverance journey to freedom.

To my dear friend and sister in Christ, Kathy Dobraski, for praying for me, helping me in this process, and encouraging me to continue.

To my friend and sister in Christ, Marj Hotelling, for including me on the deliverance team that has encouraged the writing of this book and helped bring forth some of its material.

    Foreword

I'm pleased to have been asked to write the foreword for Julie's book. Throughout my thirty-five-plus years in ministry, I'm blessed to know Julie and to have her as one of our staff pastors. Pastor Julie is a worship pastor here at Third Day Worship Centre in Syracuse, New York. I have seen Julie grow in her call and ministry. She is a gift to the church, and she has learned to trust God through troubled waters. And because of her consistent relationship with God, Julie has grown as a minister with ministry in deliverance, prayer, praise/worship, and in the prophetic.

With the support of her family, she has moved into the realm of writing books. I know you will be blessed by the insights she provides in this book! Proverbs 21:30–31 says, There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord. The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.

Pastor Julie has brought out in her book insight on how to walk in success and victory! The wisdom that you will find in this book will equip you in the fight of faith that we all fight. Congratulations, Julie, on a book that will equip the body of Christ for future battles.

    The Importance of Watching

But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.

    Chapter 1

What Are Gates, and What Does the Bible Say about Gates?

What are gates? A gate is a hinged barrier used to close an opening in a wall, fence, or hedge. So in other words, gates can let something into an area or keep something out of an area. It is an entry and an exit point. Gates can also be locked. Gates come in all shapes and sizes and can be made from many different types of materials. Typically, where there is a gate, you will also find a gatekeeper. We will discuss this further later in the chapter. Gates have been around for centuries, and they are still used today. They secure entry into the wealthiest homes in America, prisons, schools, airports, and military bases.

In biblical history, gates were used for much more than protection. Let's explore what the Bible has to say about gates. In ancient Israeli cities, the high walls that protected the city contained a large strong gate. Within that gate was a small corridor or a larger courtyard area that lead to an inner gate. In Deuteronomy 3:5, the Israelites recall the cities they have defeated and what they looked like. Here is what it says: "All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns." Guards were also stationed in lookout towers on the sides of the gate within the wall and watched over the city. These double gates helped with added city security, but the area between the gates is what the Bible most often refers to. This area had many purposes, and we will explore some of them now.

The first reference to a gate in scripture is in Genesis 19:1. It says, "Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground." Lot resided in Sodom and was often found sitting in the gate of the city. The gate was a gathering place of men, much like our modern-day coffee shop. It was also a place where idlers (lazy people) hung out. This is where the angels appeared when they came to Sodom. The story goes that Lot wanted them to stay at his home, and the angels were going to stay in the square (in the gates); Lot insisted they come with him, and they did. He knew they would not be safe there.

We are told in Genesis 22:17 that one of the blessings of Abraham's descendants is because he did not withhold his son from the Lord, his descendants would possess the gates of their enemies! This saint is something to rejoice about. Oh, that we will possess the gates of our enemies. "Blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies" (Genesis 22:17). Again, we see this promise restated in Genesis 24:60 to Rebecca as a blessing on her from her siblings. It reads,

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her:

    "Our sister, may you become

    The mother of thousands of ten thousands;

    And may your descendants possess

The gates of those who hate them."

What an awesome promise to us! The Lord is saying we should have control of the gates. We will discuss later what this is referring to in our lives.

In Amos 5, we see that the gate is where the prophets often were found crying out the word of the Lord that was given to them. Amos 5:10 reads, They hate the one who rebukes in the gate, And they abhor the one who speaks uprightly. The prophets were also told to stand in the gates of the Lord's house and proclaim the word of the Lord. Jeremiah was told to do just that in Jeremiah 7:2: "Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord!'" Why do you think these prophets were called to cry in the gates? The gates were a bustling place, with people coming in and going out all day long. Even kings were in the gates.
