CHAPTER 1
The Morning After
Caalin awoke to the sun shining in his face through the crack in the curtains of his bedroom window. He lay there staring at the ceiling wondering if the last year had all been a dream. He looked around his room at all the posters and diagrams of spaceships and cruisers on his walls.
There was a knock at his door but before he could ask who it was, in rushed Ssam and Mouse. Mouse jumped up on Caalin’s bed bouncing him up and down as Ssam asked, Are you planning to sleep all day?
Caalin was just about to ask a question when Ssam said, Ang and Ssophia are in the dining room with your mother and there is not telling what they could be talking about.
Caalin jumped out of bed at the thought of his mother telling Ang some more embarrassing thing about him. He told Ssam and Mouse to grab his uniform as he went into his bathroom to clean up. When he came back into the room his uniform was lying on his bed. Ssam looked at him and asked, Why do you want to wear your uniform when you have a closet full of normal clothes to wear.
Caalin replied, I don’t want you to feel like you stick out like a bache weasel in a field of poca geese.
Mouse was about to say something when Ssam cut him off, that’s his way of saying he doesn’t want us to be the only strange looking ones in the crowd.
They both laughed as Caalin finished getting dressed by fastening his boots. They all then left the room and made their way down to the dining room.
When they entered the dining room the girls were giggling, and as they looked up to see the boys they broke into laughter. Caalin’s face turned red without even knowing what they were laughing about. He looked over at his mother and she threw her hands up, honestly dear we weren’t talking about you at all.
This caused more laughter from the girls.
Caalin’s mother then told him, After you’ve had breakfast you will find a surprise waiting for you down at the storage building. You know dear, you called it your hanger.
The girls begin laughing again. Even thought Ang was laughing hard she was still able to tell Jillian, you are going to have to stop it you’re making my sides hurt.
The boys sat down to have their breakfast as the girls and Jillian cleared their plates and went into the kitchen laughing as they left. Ssam and Mouse were staring at Caalin as he shrugged his shoulders, I don’t know what they were talking about but I do know it was about me.
Ssam and Mouse chuckled and began gobbling down their food, they wanted to get down to the storage building to find out what the surprise was.
After breakfast the group left to make their way to the storage building. Once they were outside Ang spread her wings and took to flight. She flew up and over the castle then back down to join the group. She looked over at Caalin and before he could open his mouth she stated, I needed to stretch my wings.
Caalin smiled, and you looked good doing it.
Now Ang was doing the blushing as Ssophia laughed.
They soon rounded the corner of the building and there sat the surprise. There were five sky cycles sitting on the landing pad, complete with protective vest and helmets. There was a special vest made to perfectly fit Ang. As they stood there staring at the cycles Lord Matthews walked out of the building, I was wondering how long it would take you kids to make your way down here.
Caalin looked at his dad, but before he could mutter a word Lord Matthews cut in, you will need some transportation to get around; you do want to show everyone the rest of the planet don’t you?
Caalin just looked at his dad and gave him a big smile, thanks dad.
Thomas patted Caalin on the back, you guys better get going if you want to see anything today, you’re wasting time.
They all begin putting on their vest as Thomas walks back toward the castle. Ssam looked over at Caalin, your dad’s the best, these are great cycles.
Caalin asked where everyone wanted to go first and the girls looked at each other then shouted SHOPPING! We want something to wear besides these uniforms.
Caalin smiled, Ok to the market place first, now let’s get going we are wasting our day.
They all put their helmets on, started the cycles and were off with Caalin leading the way. They raced over the nearby orchards and fields, until finally they came to the edge of town. Parking their cycles at one of the parking facilities they begin walking down the street toward the shops.
As they came to a shop that was dedicated strictly to women, Ssophia and Ang told the boys they wanted to stop and look around. Ssam look over at his sister, we’re not going in there with you two.
Ang stopped Ssophia from saying what she was thinking and just told the boys they would meet them at the cycles in two hours. Caalin nodded, We will see you in a couple of hours then,
and they turned and went on down the street.
The boys were walking down the sidewalk looking into the store windows when Caalin heard someone call MATTHEWS!
it had come from someone behind him. He turned to see Mar Jansen standing there fist clenched and staring straight at him.
Well Marion I would say it’s a pleasure to see you, but it’s not.
Caalin quickly snapped at him. He continued, Haven’t you found out that bullying just makes you enemies not friends? You should use your strength to help the smaller kids and not take their lunch credits.
Mar’s fist clenched tighter, you’ve smarted off one time too many Matthews, I’m about to smash your face in.
Before Mar could take one step in their direction he was lifted off the ground spinning and came to rest on top of the nearest building. Mar had a look of shock on his face as Caalin shouted, Marion I’ve learned a lot about myself while I was away, and the things I am capable of doing. I don’t want any trouble so you may want to think about what you wanted to do while you’re waiting for help to get down from there.
The boys laughed as they turned and walked further down the street.
After an hour and half of shopping the boys had shirts, trousers and boots, and made their way back to the cycles to wait on the girls. The girls were fifteen minutes late in getting back to meet the boys. As they walked up with all their packages Ssam looked over to Mouse and Caalin, how are we going to get all this stuff home on the cycles?
Caalin walked over to the parking attendant and talked with him for a few minutes then turned and walked back to the others. Before anyone could ask him any questions a delivery vehicle pulled up. Caalin looked at the others, he will take the packages back for us, and we can continue with our day.
They all cheered and began putting their packages in the vehicle. Caalin paid the driver and off he went to deliver the packages.
Everyone got back on their cycles and Caalin said, We will head toward the mountains of Arcar in the distance.
As they were lifting up out of the parking facility Ssophia ask, Who is that boy on top of that roof; he seems to be yelling at you Caalin.
Caalin replied, oh just an old classmate.
And they took off with Ssam and Mouse laughing so hard they almost fell off their cycles.
As they neared a mountain village that was set next to a large lake, Mouse thought he saw what looked like a spaceship in the trees. He quickly shook the idea off as they began to land near a little café next to the lake. Caalin turned to the group, one of my mom’s cousins owns this place and it has some of the best fish around.
They all dismounted their cycles and went in. Caalin was greeted at the door by his cousin’s wife, who after some introductions and a few hugs, showed them to the best table in the house with a great view of the lake.
They sat for over an hour and had a great lunch; in fact Ssam said, I think that was the best fish I’ve ever eaten.
Afterward they all took a short walk around the village. Ssophia pointed out, I think we should probably be getting back home as Caalin’s mother maybe getting worried about us.
They started back to the cycles when Ang spotted a florist shop and told Caalin, It would be a nice jester if we took your mother back some flowers.
Caalin smiled, she loves Parditorions (a large rose like flower with a beautiful aroma).
Ang turned to the clerk and he showed her three different colored Parditorions. She turned back to Caalin, Red, Pink or Lavender.
He just gave her a wink, Lavender they smell the best.
Ang told the clerk and he gave her a large arrangement for a small price saying, Lady Matthews will love these.
It turns out he too was one of Caalin’s cousins and knew who she was buying them for.
During this time Ssam had wandered away looking at some other plants. A strange little wiry man came up to him calling to him, Jo is that you? How did you get back? You look younger than when I left you.
Ssam stopped him, I’m sorry sir but my name is Ssam not Jo.
The man looked at him for a minute, you’re not him, they are trying to confuse me, they want the secret!
he then turned and ran away looking back every now and then to make sure no one was following him.
One of the clerks came walking up and asked Ssam, Is everything alright sir?
Ssam assured him everything was fine then asked. Do you know who that guy was?
The clerk answered, He goes by the name Ziggy. He lives somewhere in the jungle and brings in exotic plants and flowers to sell to the florist shops in town.
He also said that Ziggy seems to look a little older every time they come in and he acted a little crazier each time as well. He continued, I think it must be the living in the jungle that is doing that to him.
Mouse called Ssam and he rejoined the group as they made their way back to the cycles and lifted off heading for home. As they were passing over the jungle Mouse thought he saw the spaceship again. When they reached the castle they parked the cycles and went straight in. Jillian met them at the door and Ang quickly gave her the flowers. She thanked Ang with a hug then turned to Ssam and Ssophia, your parents would like you to call, they are curious about how you are enjoying the time off.
She directed them to Lord Matthews’ study where she showed them how to make the call on the halo projection system. She then left them and rejoined the others while asking one of the staff to put the flowers in a vase.
Ssophia place the call to their parents on the system. This system actually projects the individual into the others environment as a hologram. A minute later their parents were standing in the room with them. Their mother tried to give them a hug, when their father shook his head, Elizabeth they are not actually here.
She look over at him, I know Geanio but I can’t help wanting to hug them.
At that moment Nam stepped into the room, well how was my grand your first day of freedom?
Sophia went on to tell them about the boys sleeping in and the conversation that Ang and she had with Jillian. She went on to cover the shopping trip and all the different clothes that she had found and bought and finally the great meal they had at the lake side restaurant in the mountains.
Geanio looked over at Ssam, who had just taken a seat and sat there quietly waiting for his sister to finish her rant. Well son did you get to do anything today or did your sister do it all?
knowing he was cutting off Ssophia’s conversation and letting her know that she was not the only one in the room.
Ssam jumped up from his seat and began telling his dad all about the sky cycles that Lord Matthews had provided them to get around on while they were there. He was starting to get into more details about them when his mom interrupted, Sorry dear but we don’t have the time for you to give us every detail about the sky cycles could you just tell us about what you did while your sister was buying all her wonderful outfits.
Ssam stopped for a second then, Oh, yes, sorry mom I just got caught up in how great they were.
He continued and told them about Caalin having a run in with a bully from his old school and how Caalin stopped the fight before it could get started by putting him on a rooftop. Geanio started laughing but Elizabeth elbowed him in the side to stop him in his tracks. Ssam knew his dad thought it was funny when he winked at him. Ssam then told them about an old man who thought he was someone named Jo when they were in the mountain village.
Nam thought that to be kind of funny, that was what they called your Grandfather Joshua when he was in school. It could have been someone that went to school with him long ago, you do favor you grandfather a lot.
She told him that his grandfather had a lot of friends in school and many of them are still alive, I wouldn’t let it bother you dear, some of my friends tell me Ssophia looks like me when I was her age.
Nam was old but she didn’t really look old, she looked like someone half her age and was still quite beautiful. Ssophia told her, I hope I’m as beautiful as you when I reach your age.
people of their race really don’t age very fast.
Well it was time to say goodbye as they could hear the rest of the group outside greeting Caalin’s father as he had just arrived home. Geanio asked Ssam, Could you ask Thomas to step into the room for a second?
Ssam stepped to the door and opened it just as everyone was walking by. Lord Matthews my father would like to speak with you if you don’t mind.
Lord Matthews stepped into the room, Geanio how are you and the family doing?
Geanio started to stick his hand out to shake Thomas then realized what he was doing, we’re all fine here Thomas, thank you.
He then told Thomas he wanted to take a moment just to thank him and Jillian for letting the kids stay for the visit; they seem to be having a great time. He also wanted to extend the offer for the kids to visit with them whenever they wanted to.
Thomas told him, the kids are no problem and that any time Caalin wanted to visit with Ssam and Ssophia I would be happy to let him do so.
Everyone said their goodbye and shut down the system. Jillian then stepped into the room and told everyone that dinner was being served and they all made their way to the dining room.
At dinner Thomas looked at the kids, I take it everyone had a good day.
There was a loud YES
spoken in unison. He then turned his attention to Caalin, I heard that it took an hour for the fire brigade to get Marion Janson down from the roof of one of the stores in town, was that some of your handy work?
Mouse jumped in quickly, that kid was about to punch Caalin in the noise, it was just self defense.
Ssam was nodding his head in agreement with Mouse, in hopes that Thomas would not push the incident any further.
Caalin held his hand up to stop his friends from coming to his defense. He then turned to his dad, I was just trying to avoid a confrontation with Mar, I put him on the roof to give him some time to think about his actions, thinking back on it I could have done something different that wouldn’t have given the fire brigade so much trouble. I am sorry father, it won’t happen again.
Lord Matthews turned back to his meal, "I
