Falling Apart
KAYLA stayed strong when she found the lump; calm when the doctor confirmed her suspicions. Even when she started chemo and felt so, so ill she’d held it together for the children’s sake. The twins were just starting secondary school. That was enough for them to deal with.
“I think we should tell them you’re not well,” Craig had said. “They’re old enough to understand.”
That was the trouble. They’d know what the word cancer meant. Kayla was determined Emma and Thomas be spared the knowledge their mother was fighting for her life. Mostly it was that, but she felt their concern and fear would be harder to face than her own.
Thankfully Kayla didn’t lose her hair. One small mercy which allowed her to remain in denial most of the time.
