    How to use this book

What you’re about to read started as a year-long series of blog posts on my website.

The previous year, I’d claimed a verse from Psalm 1 as my theme for the year and dove deep into what it meant to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. To never fear drought and to always bear fruit.

Well, that exploration turned up all sorts of challenging insights but also piqued my curiosity for what else God might teach me through nature. So I latched onto a verse in Romans about how God’s attributes are clearly seen in creation so that men are without excuse when it comes to the existence of God.

That led to an All Creation Declares blog series, spread out over the course of the year. In the next pages, you’ll find those lightly-edited posts arranged in order of the creation account. Most of the relatively-short readings include Scripture quotations but all include a What About You application section.

My prayer is that as you reflect on the intricate detail and infinite creativity found within creation, that you will also come to see God in a way that deepens your relationship with Him.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. ~ Psalm 19:1-2

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

    All Creation Declares His Glory

Acolorful sunset over snowcapped mountain peaks. A soaring eagle. The full moon on a starry night. Tropical fish in a coral reef. Waves lapping on a sandy shore. The varied patterns found on giraffes, jaguars, cheetahs, and zebras. Running birds and flying squirrels. Rainbows arched across blue skies. Intricate snowflakes and honeycombs. Microscopic subatomic particles and vast galaxies. An amazingly complex DNA code.

And some people think it all just happened by accident. Not a chance!

I believe there is a Creator who formed the heavens and the earth with just His spoken word. (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-3) Through that same word, God sustains all things. (Hebrews 1:3)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. ~ Hebrews 11:3

Since I wasn’t there at the beginning of the world to see how it happened, I’ll admit it takes faith to believe this scenario. But it also takes faith to believe in the theory of evolution. Or as one author described it, goo to you by way of the zoo. I’d rather place my trust in an intelligent Designer than random chance, thank you very much.

Just like a sculpture, painting, symphony, or poem reveals clues about the one who created it, all creation reveals God in the paradox of inaudible noise. Nature screams about God without uttering a single word!

    As David wrote:

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. ~ Psalm 19:1-4a

    Paul wrote:

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

When I consider all the power and beauty and mystery this world holds, I have a choice to make. Will I worship and serve the Creator or elevate the created things? After all, there is a God who is revealed in all of His creation.

He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth—the Lord God Almighty is his name. ~ Amos 4:12-13

No more excuses. His Creation speaks louder than words.

    What about you?

What is your response when you see majestic mountain peaks or multi-colored sunsets or intricate designs? Do you see God’s hand in His creation? Why or why not?

    Our Response

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the world Thy Hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed … When through the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze … Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee, how great Thou art.

Carl Boberg (translated by Stuart Hine)

The powerful strains of this familiar hymn capture only a glimpse of my inadequate response to the handiwork of a Holy Creator. Like I
