1 – What is Economics?
Economics is a big word. But it's about something we see every day - buying things!
Economics is how people make choices about goods and services. People make or grow goods like food, clothes, video games, and toys. People do services for others, like dog walking, cooking, or teaching.
To make goods and offer services, people use resources. There are human resources (people!), natural resources (things from nature like water), capital resources (money and buildings) and entrepreneurship (great business ideas and risk-taking).
Every day, you make economics choices. You must pick what to buy at the store with your limited allowance. For a country, economics includes all the buying, selling and producing - billions of choices made by workers, families, businesses and governments.
Economics answers questions like:
- How are goods and services made and sold?
- How do people earn and spend money?
- Why do prices change?
- How do countries trade?
- How does the government impact the economy?
Economics is everywhere - at shops, on the news, even at your school! Learning economics helps explain how the world works. Let's explore more!
