ABOUT 2.5 MILLION people in Australia work in the gig economy (working freelance or on short-term contracts rather than being permanent), or about a quarter of the workforce. Safe to say a lot of them are millennials. Airtasker, Airbnb, Deliveroo, Uber… this kind of work can offer flexibility and sweet, sweet cash – but it also has its downsides. Watch out for:
TAX. Immediately slice off 30 per cent of every dollar you earn and put it in a high-interest savings account ready to hand over come tax time. It’s not your money, it’s the ATO’s, and they get quite annoyed if you don’t pay up.
