WRITING ORIGINS - MY STORY
Sometimes you just know.
When I was thirteen years old and in the seventh grade, I had a literature class. One day, our teacher held up a picture of a lady looking forlornly off into the distance.
Our instructions were to write a story from that picture. She gave us guidelines for length, and scope, etc. It was to be a short story, not just a page or two.
Immediately when I looked at that picture, I knew it was the end of my story. I wrote feverishly. I had the story in my head and I worked to just get it out and onto the paper.
We had only an ink pen, or pencil, and lined notebook paper. I don’t know how long I worked on the assignment. It seems like we had a day or two to complete it.
When I was done and reread the story, it gave me chills. I knew right then I had a gift to write. I couldn’t wait to turn my paper into the teacher.
WAITING FOR PRAISE OR REJECTION
After she had graded them all, she chose mine to read aloud in class and gave me such praise that my belief about the gift I had was confirmed, but also scare me a bit too.
That was several decades ago. For many years, I dabbled at writing stories, but never seemed to have the attention span to finish lengthy projects.
I wrote several brief articles for small local newspapers, but not on a long-term basis. Boredom would always quickly set in.
My career path set me square in corporate American, and I flourished. I was thankful for my writing skills because I relied on them heavily.
When in Human Resources, I wrote lengthy policy and procedure manuals. I was also required to write many professional letters that persuaded different parties on specific policy and actions to be taken.
MY VERY FIRST NOVEL
Then, about two decades after that initial praise, I wrote a novel. I had a splendid idea and my schedule permitted me time to do it.
I wrote about a fourth of the book. Then something upset my emotional apple cart, and I just gave up. I was so discouraged about things happening in my life at the time that I just couldn’t muster the creative energy to work on the novel.
Fast forward another decade and that book still taunted me. I would pray about being ‘stuck’ and not able to move the storyline forward. I felt as though all the storylines were tied into a knot that I could not unravel.
JUST TELL THE STORY
I prayed about it often because I felt God had given me the story and the gift of writing. God would always simply reply, Just tell the story.
I continued to pray about it often and He would always reply the same. I knew that whenever I did get around to writing it again, that it was just about telling the story.
I never finished that novel. But, then another decade later, while in prayer one day, I heard God say, It is time to write.
I knew that statement meant that it was time to write novels. And so I did.
BLOGGING
I spent a few years writing many inspirational and teaching blogs. A friend of mine and I both wrote and posted on one blog. We had almost five posts a week between us for over two years. Then, when that season was over, we both knew it was done.
I also wrote Real Estate blogs for my business on another blog. I spent a lot of time writing.
ON TO NEW THINGS
I have kept a journal for a long time with story and book ideas. They are both fiction and non-fiction.
On the day I heard God say to me, It is time to write,
I knew exactly what it was I was to write. About a year earlier, I had an idea for another book and had written copious notes. I had even drawn a map of the fictional town.
I had written character profiles and a synopsis of the story. On that very day after hearing God, I got up from where I was sitting and wrote.
MY FIRST NOVEL
Now, writing that first novel was not my favorite writing experience. I had an agenda, and I kept trying to force the story to fit the agenda. It was a mess. It was stiff and disjointed.
Once done, I knew I did not like the first half. So, of course, I set out praying about it. God’s words from years ago came back to me, Just tell the story.
At that point, I asked for divine guidance to help me edit the mess I had created in the first half of the book.
I RIPPED AND REWROTE
I ripped out entire chapters and then moved chapters and sections around, creating a better flow. I reworded sentences and read and reread until I felt it was good.
While writing that novel, I would go to sleep at night and sometimes entire chapters would download to
