10,000 Words per Day - Mason Sabre
Chapter One
Introduction
You'd be amazed at how many times I have deleted and reworked this chapter of the book. I swear it is the hardest one I have come across. It's crazy. I have spent so much time trying to think of what to say in the beginning because this is where you meet me for the first time and not one of my characters. I know first impressions count, and you don't get a chance to make a second one.
In the end, I figured I should write it the same way I do my fiction; the same way this book will show you, and no, that isn’t a sales pitch. It’s just me realising what I am doing. So here we go. I am just going to write this and worry about the rest later, and if you are reading this, it should have been well edited by now and more anecdotal.
Taking a stab in the dark here. I am going to assume you’re reading this because, like the title says, you want to write 10,000 words in a day, or, at the very least, you want to increase your hourly or daily word count?
Right?
Nod your head and say, Yes, Mason.
I have read countless introductions in writing books in the planning stages of writing this book. Not to copy them, but to get a feel of what was in them. Mostly, I see they talk about themselves, who they are and how they got there. I understand that, and maybe it helps, but it doesn't feel right.
You know my name is Mason Sabre, but even that isn’t important, really. This is not a book on how to be me. I can tell you I use the methods I will outline in this book to consistently write 10,000 words in a day. I can also tell you that most of my novels have been written in this way and I have developed my method over time, tweaking it as I go along. I am sure, as you read and practice what I have to say, you’ll tweak things to suit you and your writing style. And I want you to. No two writers are the same. Learn what I am here to teach you and then make it work for you, in a way that suits you.
I will tell you, though, this book is not a magic pill. You can’t just read it and then suddenly poof your word count is increased, and you can suddenly throw out 10,000 words, any more than you can read a book on running and then run the London Marathon.
It doesn’t work that way, I’m afraid. Just as reading a book on running will give you the skills to achieve running a marathon, this book will provide you with the skills, which you must practice, to get to where you want to be with your word count. If you read this book and do nothing about it, nothing is going to change. If you do the work, this system can work for you.
First, however, I want to debunk a thought. One I am sure you’re familiar with.
There is this perceived notion about writing faster and the quality of work being produced. I have read countless articles, and I bet you have to, claiming that it would be impossible to write fast and produce a good book. I read one particular article, a year or more ago, that stated putting out two to three books per year was too fast, and by doing this, the author was reducing the quality of their work.
That is like saying, if an author takes three years to write one book, the book will be a literary masterpiece, and that isn’t true.
Writing faster does not mean the book will be poorly written. Not editing your book, not learning your craft, publishing your first draft without putting any other work into it … yes, those will mean you put out a poor-quality book.
In this day and age of the indie author, it is vital to a writer’s career to be able to put out books consistently. There are around 3000 new books on Amazon’s Kindle platform per day alone, and I am sure at the time of reading this, the number will have increased significantly. You’ve got to find a way to keep up.
However, in saying that, the goal of this book is not to teach you how to publish faster. I am sure there are other books and resources out there that can do that for you if that’s what you want to learn. This book is to simply give you the skills to write more and write faster.
About Moi
You can skip this part if you want, but I know some readers do want to know who is talking to them from the depths of the abyss. Especially as I’ll be that little voice in your head for the next few chapters, maybe you do want to get acquainted.
I am a writer. I have been writing since I was a child. Actually, I have been writing since before I could write. I was one of those children with a vast imagination. I could draw. I could play let’s pretend. All of that was writing, or at least storytelling, even though I wasn’t doing the physical act of putting pen to paper … or pencil as it was back then. I wasn’t allowed to use pens. My mother didn’t want marks on the furniture. I was writing.
I have written countless stories and books through my life, so it is hard to say to you here, I wrote my first novel when … because I was around the age of six, and maybe they don’t count.
I think it is best to take you back to the beginning of my writing as an adult. When I had a full-time job, children, a spouse … generally, a busy life to balance with what I wanted to do.
Around the year 2004, I discovered how to mix gaming and writing together. It was a fun time for me. I was working
