    Prologue

    ––––––––

Today was supposed to be a celebration, instead of this chaos! I was supposed to be far from Sosha by now. Sello shakes his head in disbelief.

... far from Van Damme and the police! He feels defeated and by the looks of things, he is not the only one.

The people of Sosha are littering on the streets in every direction.

Why do people think emptying dustbins on the streets will solve their problems? Amogelang gets worked up.

Sello lights a cigarette while still thinking about how bad events have turned for him.

It's not about solving problems. It just feels good to go against the government, plus it lets the steam off.

He takes a long pull at his cigarette and then exhales deeply trying to make sense of where the wall came from and if there really is no way out.

Now that the mob is satisfied with the mess they made, they move to burn the trash on the streets making a huge fire. Then they start chanting and singing around it, calling for the government to break down the wall.

Sello and Amogelang pause from walking to take in the scene.

I don't get it? Amogelang says after a while.

    They start walking again.

"You won't. You're just too good, Amo! You’re nothing like the rest of us."

    What does that mean?

I mean, the world needs more people like you.

    Thanks, I guess?

They walk in silence for some time. Each friend is lost in their own thoughts while all around them the chaos is ramping up. A group of teenagers bumps into them om a hurry to join the mob.

Watch it! This whole thing is a mess! Where are the police? They should come to arrest these hooligans and keep the peace! Amogelang gets agitated.

Sello ignores them. The chaos outside him is nothing compared to the one inside his mind.

Gavaza overhears Amogelang’s plea for the police and approaches them. Sorry for eavesdropping, but I guess you don’t know that the police station is empty. I was supposed to be on duty as we speak, but when I got there, I found no one! Not the station commander; none of my colleagues are there! There’re literally no cars, no weapons, nothing! It's like they just disappeared into thin air!

Sello who is numb to the situation starts to feel his fear growing due to what Gavaza just said. For a moment he thought that if things were to get worse with Van Damme, he could maybe run to the police, but what this police constable is telling them proves that there is no way out for him.

The world is ending! Amogelang starts to lose hope.

My life is over, I'm telling you! Sello throws his arms in despair.

I wouldn’t take it that far! Let me tell you what I think. I think someone is playing a sick joke on us. Gavaza tells them.

As Sello is about to answer he sees Van Damme, Razor, and what seems like the rest of their crew walking towards them. This time he does not alert his friend or the police talking to them.

I need to get out of here, but not with Amo. If today’s my last day alive I need to make sure that I get as far away from him as possible.

He leaves Amogelang and Gavaza still in conversation and runs off toward the riot not daring to look back.

    Lolo, where are you going?

Sello quickly disappears among the crowd.

He is unbelievably crazy! Why is he joining the riot?

Who can blame him? I also feel like joining in the fun! If we can’t beat them, we might as well join them!

That’s stupid! Excuse me, I need to go look for my friend.

Right across them Van Damme and his crew go after Sello like eagles zoning in on their prey.

Get him and bring him to me! Van Damme instructs his crew.

The mob is getting more violent as Sello moves sleekly among them trying to find a safe place. His fear is rising as he imagines what Van Damme will do to him if they catch him.

Damn, that wall! Why did I have to be trapped in Sosha?

He tries to stay calm, but his heart is pounding in his ears. He looks past the many faces surrounding him and sees the crew coming from a distance.

You need to lose them, Lolo or you’ll lose your life!

    In A Panic

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Today was supposed to be a celebration. I was supposed to be far from Sosha by now. Sello Sedibe shakes his head in disbelief as he continues, Far from Van Damme and the cops! He feels defeated and by the looks of things, he is not the only one.

His best friend Amogelang Bokaba and him walk home in complete confusion and the community of Sosha become a literal reflection of their inner thoughts.

Sello blows smoke in a slow drawn exhale, fully understanding the reactions of those who are fleeing in every direction.

Katlego Lebese is one of those who are running to warn those who are not aware of what is happening in Sosha. She passes Sello and Amogelang in a hurry and the friends watch her get to her mother as she navigates her path with her walking stick. Sello wonders if the woman with the walking stick is the same one he robbed the other day.
