    Trashy was born on a farm, but he did not have a name. He was just a puppy – a labrador retriever puppy. He had six brothers and sisters.

    He spent his days playing, biting things, rolling in the dirt, and looking cute.

    One day, when he was playing, a family of humans came to the farm. They looked at all of the puppies. They laughed and smiled.

    Trashy did not know why, but he wanted to please them. And so did all of his brothers and sisters. They acted crazy, chased their tails, and fell over. Everyone laughed.

    And, then, the farmer reached down, grabbed his brother, and gave him to the family. They hugged him and smiled, and then they walked away with his brother.

    His brother looked back and whimpered, and then was gone. Trashy was sad and confused. He went to his mom and asked, Why did they take my brother?

    She sighed and told him, It is the way of the world.

    I don’t understand, Mom.

    She licked his head and said, I know, but some day you will.

    Trashy sensed a sadness in his mom. Dogs are good at sensing feelings.

    Trashy felt sad too, so he flopped down next to his mom and slept.

    TWO

    Two more weeks passed, and two more of his brothers and sisters were taken by people. Trashy still felt sad, but he also felt jealous. He wanted his own humans.
