About this ebook

There are infinite untold stories of childhood trauma survivors. Hiding and harboring childhood trauma while continuing to navigate through this course of life is prevalent in our society, and it doesn't discriminate. Fight-or-flight, or freeze, is the perpetual state for countless individuals struggling to develop and maintain secure roots.

In this story, the author describes the covert methods she used to survive childhood trauma and establish a root system without the conventions of security, identity, and safety present in her developmental years. It is a story about resilience.

The study of mindful resilience yoga with Veterans Yoga Project prompted the author to move courageously forward with acknowledging the wounds, liberating the mind, and embracing the uniqueness of her inner child.

This book is dedicated to my parents, the ones who carried the trauma existing in our ancestral DNA for over four hundred years to me. The generational patterns were developed devoid of grounding in the foundational energy centers of our being, our root chakras.

My parents lived in and were raised in survival mode before the civil rights movement, which means that socioeconomic inequality, segregation, and disenfranchisement were acceptable and supported by our government. They witnessed and lived through the horrors of beatings, lynchings, verbal and emotional abuse, and scarcity of resources. Despite all of it, they were able to give me life, for which I am grateful.

In my reflection, when I look in the mirror, I see my mother, and I see my father, and I say to them, I understand your battles, struggles, and wars. I don't have answers to many questions, yet I am content with my portion and equipped to survive, determined to continue living and navigating the earth in search of more peace, tranquility, and love.

Parents must raise children in an imperfect world filled with imperfect people just like them—perfectly imperfect. I have beautiful childhood memories, which I cherish. My mother exposed me to the beauty of nature by constantly bringing me to green spaces, seashores, and snowcapped mountains. She was nurturing and loving in good times. My father provided the connection with my aunts, uncles, and cousins—the extended family bonds. The good times were filled with joy and provide great memories.

I do not want anyone to misunderstand my story in considering this a book about parent shaming. It is not. It is simply my story of surviving childhood trauma. I love my parents.

    Introduction

This is my story about my experiences as a child growing up in what is now known as a traumatic environment. I have attempted to write this story several times over time, yet I have been halted in my tracks because of the pain of reliving the experiences in my mind. I learned how to process the emotions by convincing myself that these things occurred in my past; they are history, never to be repeated live. Although the pain does not go away, it can and is managed much in the same way that it was managed when the events occurred. (I was unaware of these management practices at the time.)

I am not a journalist; therefore, this book will be written raw and in the way I desire my story to be told. My intent is to share my experiences with the world in the hope that they will inspire someone else to be brave enough to step out of hiding and face the reality of the circumstances that have created the roots to which they are attached.

My mantra is, I am peace, and I am love, all-consuming. It is my desire to help those who are suffering find liberation and peace and love. There are many in the world unaware of how early childhood experiences have formed their roots.

    This is my story.

    Chapter 1

Once again, I was rushed out of my third-grade class to the nurse's office because once again, the morning vomiting had begun. I was really enjoying listening to my teacher read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I attempted to sit quietly and still in hopes of calming this dizzy, queasy feeling that had once again come over me, to no avail. I vomited all over my desk! Mother was called to pick me up from school once again.

As I recall, this went on periodically for a few days or weeks. Then one day, I was called out of class without the vomiting episode to the principal's office, wondering if I had done something wrong.
