The Kybalion's Guide - Yves Guéchi

    Preface by Yves GUÉCHI:

The Kybalion: A Study in the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece is a book written by The Three Initiates, a group of mysterious authors who decried themselves as students of ancient wisdom.

The book deals with Hermetic philosophy, which is an esoteric tradition that dates back to ancient Egypt and ancient Greece.

The Kybalion explores hermetic principles such as mentality, correspondence, vibration, polarity, rhythm, cause and effect, and generation.

Although some aspects of the book are controversial and debatable, it is considered an influential text in the field of esotericism and spirituality.

It is, in a way, a development of the Emerald Table, a very short hermetic text, composed of a dozen allegorical and obscure formulas.

Still, there is no denying that the content of the Kybalion is composed of a philosophical richness that can help seekers of wisdom.

I thought it would be useful to republish the original text, translated from the English by Mr. André Durville.

The Kybalion was published in English by the Yogi Publication Society of Chicago in December 1908 and is now in the public domain.

And to add observations and explanations to allow readers to appreciate the true value of the notions that will be welcome to give us new means of personal and spiritual development.

Whenever possible, I give exercises related to the texts of the Kybalion to make it less theoretical and so that it becomes a real tool for transformation.

I also thought it would be a good idea to add The Emerald Tables of Hermes Trismegistus in an appendix so that the reader is all in hand in a single book in order to facilitate his research work.

The book The Kybalion is divided into seven chapters, each exploring a different Hermetic principle. The seven hermetic principles are:

➔  The Principle of Mentalism: This principle states that the universe is mental and that everything that happens in the universe has its source in the mind.

➔  The Correspondence Principle: This principle states that everything that exists in the universe is in correspondence with something else, whether at a higher or lower level.

➔  The principle of vibration: This principle states that everything in the universe is in motion, that everything vibrates at a particular frequency.

➔  The Principle of Polarity: This principle states that everything has its opposite, and that these opposites are actually manifestations of the same principle.

➔  The principle of rhythm: This principle states that everything has a rhythm, a pulsation, and that these rhythms are constantly fluctuating.

➔  The Principle of Cause and Effect: This principle states that every cause has its effect, and every effect has its cause. Nothing happens by chance.

➔  The Principle of Generation: This principle states that everything in the universe has a beginning and an end, that everything is in constant transformation, and that nothing remains the same as itself.

In short, working with the principle of mentalism is about being aware of our thoughts and their creative power over our reality.

By using techniques such as meditation, creative visualization, and examining our beliefs, we can improve our ability to work with this principle and create a more positive reality for ourselves.

It is on these points of working with principles that I will dwell in the second part of this book.

This book is certainly not to be read as a novel, but it must be studied page by page to get the most out of it.

To Hermes Trismegistus known by the ancient Egyptians as The Great of the Great and The Master of Masters, this small volume of Hermetic teachings is respectfully dedicated.

    Kybalion Quotes

The lips of wisdom are closed, except in the ears of reason.

Under the footsteps of the Master, the ears of those who are ready to understand his doctrine are wide opened  .

When the ears of the pupil are ready to hear, then come the lips to fill them with Wisdom.

The principles of truth are seven in number; he who knows and understands them has the magic key that will open all the doors of the Temple before he even touches them.

The All is Spirit; the Universe is Mental.

As above, so below; as below, so above.

Nothing rests; everything stirs; everything vibrates.

Everything is Twofold; everything has poles; Everything has two extremes; similar and dissimilar have the same meaning; the opposite poles are of the same nature but of different degrees; extremes touch; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes can be reconciled.

Everything flows, within and without; everything has its duration; everything evolves and then degenerates; The swing of the pendulum manifests itself in everything; The measurement of its oscillation to the right is similar to the measurement of its oscillation to the left; The pace is constant.

Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens in accordance with the Law; Luck is but a name given to the unrecognized Law; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Act,

That which is the Fundamental Truth, the Substantial Reality, needs no special denomination, but enlightened men call it THE ALL,

In its Essence, THE WHOLE IS UNKNOWABLE.

However, the exposition of Reason must be received with the greatest hospitality and treated with respect.

The Universe is Mental; it is contained in the soul OF ALL.

THE WHOLE creates in its Infinite Spirit numberless Universes that have existed for thousands of centuries; and yet, to THE ALL, the creation, evolution, decline, and death of a million Universes seems no longer than the blink of an eye.

The Infinite Spirit OF ALL is the bosom of the Universes.

In the bosom of the Fatherly and Maternal Spirit, mortal children are at home.

There is no one in the universe who is without a Father or a Mother.

The semi-initiates, recognizing the relative non-reality of the Universe, imagine that they can defy its Laws; They are foolish and presumptuous fools who will break against the rocks and whom the elements tear apart because of their folly. The true initiate, knowing the nature of the universe, makes use of the Law against the laws, of the superior against the inferior, and by the Art of Alchemy he transmutes vile things into precious things; This is how he triumphs. Mastery does not manifest itself in abnormal dreams, visions and fantastic ideas, but in the use of the higher forces against the lower forces, avoiding the sufferings of the lower planes by vibrating on the higher planes. Transmutation, not a presumptuous negation, is the sword of the Master.

If it is true that All is in THE ALL, it is also true that THE ALL is in the All. He who fully understands this truth already possesses great knowledge.

"To possess knowledge, if one does not manifest it and express it in one's Acts, is like the hoarding of a precious metal, a vain and foolish thing. Knowledge, like Health, is intended to

Serve. The Law of Use is Universal, and whoever violates it suffers because he opposes the forces of nature."

To change your mindset or mental states, change your vibration.

To destroy a bad period of vibration, activate the Principle of Polarity and concentrate your thought on the opposite pole from that which you wish to annihilate. Kill the undesirable by changing its Polarity.

Spirit, as well as metals and elements, can be transmuted from state to state, from degree to degree, from condition to condition, from pole to pole, from vibration to vibration.

Rhythm can be neutralized by a correct application of the Art of Polarization.

Nothing escapes the Principle of Cause and Effect; but there are several Planes of Causality, and any individual can use the laws of the Higher Planes to master the Laws of the Lower Planes.

The wise man serves on the higher plane but is served on the lower plane. He obeys the laws from above, but on his own plane and on the lower planes he is master and gives orders. Moreover, in doing so, he constitutes a part of the Principle instead of opposing it. The wise man is part of the Law; By understanding its movements well, he uses it instead of being its blind slave. The wise man, in relation to the ordinary man, may be compared to the skilful swimmer, coming and going in all directions; in relation to the log which is carried away on all sides; However, the swimmer and the log, the wise man and the fool, are equally subject to the law. He who understands this truth is well on his way to mastery.

True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art. THE ALL is SPIRIT; the Universe is Mental.

    Preface by Albert L. CAILLET

The KYBALION is certainly a book out of the ordinary and marked by wisdom and mystery. Its very title is strange: by its root, KBL, perhaps it could be related to Kabbalah; at any rate, we understand that the American Master Psychist, W. W. Atkinson, was no stranger to its publication, and we congratulate him on having contributed to the reconstitution for our time of the vestiges of a science which was once all-powerful.

For this little book is very profound, beneath its apparent simplicity: too profound, even, one might say. I have had occasion to comment elsewhere on his precepts, and one of my honourable critics (in an English Review, published in India) has done us both—the KYBALION and myself—the honour of repeating his seven Laws, proving peremptorily, by the context, that their scope was (and by a great deal, unfortunately) beyond his intellect.

Now, you will say, incomprehension is sometimes one of the most refined forms of involuntary flattery... The metaphysicians of our time are, alas, only too accustomed to this kind of flattery. So much so that, if the public approves of them, or says they understand them, they begin to fear that they have let slip some blunder.

In general, the privilege of seeing more than others comes at a high price on this earth. This is a singular and contradictory state of mind of the human crowd, which is at the same time irresistibly attracted to Progress and at the same time showers with insults those who strive to open the way for it. Happy still when she does not crucify them! But this, fortunately, is hardly done nowadays... So, let's move on.

There exists, above all the others (who are like bastardized offspring) an eternal and universal Philosophy, whose origin is lost in the mists of ages. Like those great rivers whose waters become more and more turbid and muddy as they move farther away from their source, the great eternal Philosophy becomes defiled and contaminated in its conflict with human passions, and finally becomes what we call philosophical systems.

But the Principle remains pure, in spite of the abundant silt which it carries, and the Sages can find it, everywhere and always identical with itself, under the innumerable diversity of appearances. It is this immutable principle that the KYBALION deals with. It is the very source of the whole Hermetic Philosophy.

The voice of the Master of Masters, of the first Pharaoh of Egypt, of the thrice great Hermes, once more pronounces the secrets of Eternal Wisdom, which have already resounded through more than a hundred centuries. The supreme Laws which govern the manifestation of the Worlds - and of ourselves - are set forth in their purest simplicity.

The great problem of Life, that eternal riddle which the fatal Sphinx poses to all the Oedipus one after the other: this problem can only be solved by Science. And not by the vain modern science, which, exclusively analytical and material, is lamentably impotent when it comes to gathering its scattered branches to form a somewhat systematic and homogeneous edifice.

It is ancient science alone which, synthetic of its nature, its essence, its very substance, offers us the possibility of snatching ourselves from the clutches of the Sphinx. The Laws of Life are more important than the Matter of Life, because, knowing the former, we dominate the latter: the Sphinx is our slave and no longer our executioner.

Under the name of the Royal Art, or the Sacred Art, the ancient Egyptian priesthoods professed and practised a whole set of doctrines which have come down to us only by its reputation and a few rare remnants.  hence Art Royal. But, as these doctrines were based on the great sacred axiom of the Unity of the Whole, the Royal Art could still be considered under its aspect as the science of the First Principle, that is, the Science of God, and called it the Sacred Art.

The ancients were too deeply imbued with the first Hermetic axiom, the All is One, to ever think of separating  Science from Religion or Philosophy, as we have done.

This was the first of our mistakes and the source of all the others.

But to the ancient Egyptians, all Nature was Life, and life was God, and therefore whoever studied Nature became a priest of the Lord. And conversely, every member of the College of Priests, by being instructed in this
