Memoirs of a Zoo Keeper - Robert Pemberton
Chapter 1: Curious Elephant Trunks
Picture this: You're facing a creature the size of a small truck, with floppy ears, a wrinkled smile, and a trunk that could snatch a watermelon like a party favor. That, my friends, is the daily life of an elephant keeper. Now, don't be intimidated! While elephants may be mighty, they're also incredibly intelligent and surprisingly goofy, leading to endless entertainment (and the occasional sticky situation) for those of us lucky enough to work with them.
My name is Mark, and let me tell you, there's never a dull moment when you're surrounded by these gentle giants. They say elephants never forget, and trust me, neither do elephant keepers. Every day brings a new adventure, a hilarious mishap, or a heartwarming moment that reminds you why these magnificent creatures hold a special place in our hearts.
Trunk Fundamentals:
Let's start with the most obvious (and potentially mischievous) appendage: the trunk. It's not just a nose, it's a multi-tool masterpiece! They use it to breathe, smell, trumpet, drink, shower, dust themselves off, and, of course, explore their surroundings with insatiable curiosity. Now, this curiosity can be charming - watching a baby elephant playfully investigate a dropped glove with its trunk is pure joy. But let's be honest, sometimes that trunk turns into a grab anything it can reach
machine.
Take my colleague, Sarah. One sunny afternoon, she was giving our resident matriarch, Maya, a mud bath treat. Maya, ever the diva, wasn't impressed with the mud selection and decided to improve
it. With a swift trunk movement, she snatched Sarah's hat right off her head and dunked it headfirst into the mud! Needless to say, Sarah wasn't thrilled, but Maya's triumphant mud-hat trumpet had the whole team in stitches. Lesson learned: never underestimate the reach (and comedic timing) of an elephant's trunk.
Stubborn Giants? Think Again:
Elephants are often labeled as stubborn, but I see it differently. They're simply independent thinkers with strong personalities. Like any toddler, they have their preferences and can be quite persuasive when they want something. Take Tusker, our playful prankster. He developed a fondness for my water bottle (probably due to the handy carrying handle). Every time I entered his enclosure, he'd fix me with this pleading look and extend his trunk expectantly. Now, giving an elephant your water bottle isn't exactly protocol, but Tusker's puppy-dog eyes were hard to resist. My solution? A special Tusker-proof
bottle with a lock – which he promptly figured out how to open with his trunk. Talk about a challenge!
Food Fun and Factoids:
Speaking of challenges, there's the art of elephant feeding. These guys can pack away an astonishing amount of food – think hay bales, mountains of fruit, and enough veggies to feed a small village. But don't be fooled by their size, they have delicate palates! One day, we introduced a
