Shooting Times & Country

He’s always one step ahead

For all of his violent tendencies, you cannot help but admire the fox. His mannerisms, his adaptability, his cunning opportunism… they rouse respect. And the more familiar you are with him and his ways, the greater the realisation that he earns it.

Speak with 10 members of the public about foxes and I suspect in eight of them you’ll conjure images of Disney films, Springwatch stars or ‘toffs on horses’. Some will think of inner-city scoundrels raiding bins and making themselves at home under garden sheds. If one of those people happens to be a gamekeeper, however, you’ll evoke an intriguing cocktail of emotions. Fascination, loathing, frustration and intrigue will all likely feature, in a warring sort of way.
