I love diving into a new book, especially for its dedication. There's always hope it'll be for someone I know, or be sweet, funny, and make me smile.

Well, dear reader, this one's for you—whether we've met, or only within these pages. This book is dedicated to you.

    Instructions to Coral City

    ––––––––

The jimblewood birds were singing in the distance. The sky was pale blue, not a cloud in sight. Marie, the pixie fairy, was balled up and comfy in her bed. A gentle breeze blew through her open window. The scent of gorjo berries filled her nose as she gently woke.

What a beautiful morning, Marie said. She yawned and stretched her arms and wings straight out, reaching for the sky.

Marie made her way down the twisted staircase of her treehouse. She headed into the kitchen, where her mother was making gorjo muffins for breakfast. Marie entered the kitchen, and her mother handed her a glass of gorjo juice and an empty plate.

The muffins need just a few more minutes before they are ready. How did you sleep, my love? asked her mother.

Her mother was also a pixie fairy. She had the same rainbow sheen wings as her daughter, except Mother had blue instead of Marie’s pink hair. Mother also wore red-framed glasses. Marie did not need glasses. She wondered if she would need them someday.

Wonderfully. Marie smiled and took a sip of her juice. The sweet berries filled not only her belly but her soul as well.

The gorjo berry has long been a favorite of pixie fairies. Its juice gives the fairies the energy they need to fly, much like a hummingbird and their nectar.

After breakfast, I’ll need you to tend to the garden. I must make my way to Coral City and deliver a Time Potion to the fairy King, Mother said.

Marie loved Coral City. Deep in the inner city, near the banks of the Orchid River, is Marie’s favorite café, The Cerise. It is owned by her friend, Ginger, who bakes the best gorjo pies in the entire kingdom.

Marie’s mouth practically watered, thinking about the gorjo pies. If she delivered the potion instead of her mother, she could stop by for some pies and have a pleasant visit with Ginger.

Maybe I could deliver the potion to the fairy King instead, offered Marie.

No, Marie. This is much too complicated of a potion. It is much too important that it goes right. I think it is best if I carry this task out myself. Mother explained softly.

I can handle it! Marie almost yelled.

Marie, it is not just a delivery. It is an extremely complicated process involving a recipe and a intricate spell. I don’t think you are ready for such a task. Plus, you’ve never been to Coral City by yourself, Mother remained gentle but firm.

Mother. I am almost 13 years old. I can handle a simple potion, Marie said. I have been studying hard lately. All my friends have been to Coral City by themselves.

Marie was not entirely confident that the last part was true. She knew that her friend Robbie had, in fact, gone to a concert in the park, but he technically went with his brother. Not all by himself. Her other friend Tabitha had gone to Coral City alone, but she picked up a simple parcel for her grandmother.

    Please, Marie begged.

Mother stared at Marie as she bounced around the kitchen. She seemed to weigh the probability of Marie making mistakes.

You would have to make three separate stops along the way. You must ensure you complete the spells exactly how they are supposed to go. Lastly, you would have to ensure you deliver the Time Potion on time, Mother explained.

That does not sound too bad, Marie said confidently.

Marie, it is an important task, and it could be disastrous if you do not do it precisely right, Mother warned.

I can handle it, I swear. You need to start trusting me with the big things, Marie said just as the timer went off for the muffins.

Mother grabbed her hot pad holder off her hook and took the gorjo muffins out of the oven.

Alright, Marie. You should probably write this down.

Marie grabbed a piece of parchment from the old glass hutch and a pen from one of its drawers. She raced back to the counter in the kitchen and waited for instructions.

"You must take a vial of gorjo pulp and an empty vial to grandmother’s house. When you’re
