Madelyn and the Unicorn Beach - Dayne Edmondson

    Chapter 1

M addie, it’s time for bed, Maddie’s mother said from the bottom of the stairs.

Awe, Mom, Maddie said from the toy room, setting down the two unicorn dolls she’d been playing with. She groaned. Five more minutes, please, please, please? Sometimes asking many times in a row worked. Most of the time it didn’t.

No. We have a big day tomorrow.

A big day? Maddie’s ears perked up, she dropped her dolls and raced to the top of the stairs. Where are we going?

I wasn’t going to tell you until the morning. We’re visiting the Unicorn Isles tomorrow!

Maddie’s mouth formed into a big O. She let out a whoop.

Her brother came racing from his room. Woo! We’re going to see real unicorns tomorrow! Robbie shouted.

Maddie jumped up and down. I’m so excited! This will be our first time visiting.

Your father and I went to the Unicorn Isles after getting married, her mother said after walking up the stairs. It’s been many years.

How do we get there? Maddie asked. Bus? Plane? Boat?

Her mother laughed. Oh Honey, they can only be reached by magic. That’s why most people don’t know about them.

So you’ll use your magic and take us there? Maddie asked.

Sort of. Come, I’ll show you. She led Maddie and her brother downstairs to the study.

This is called a conch shell, her mother explained, removing a multi-colored object from a shelf and holding it up. It looked kind of like an upside-down gravy dish from Thanksgiving. "But this isn’t any ordinary shell. It’s magic."

Ooooh, Maddie said, leaning in to get a better look. She didn’t have magic yet, she was only eight, but her mom and dad did, and they said Robbie would soon, when he turned eleven, too. How does it work?

I’ll show you in the morning, Sugar Plum. We blow into it and picture the glimmering sand of the Unicorn Isles. Then the shell takes us there.

I want to go tonight, Maddie said.
