DEBBIE
The most horrifying moments of my life were about to begin. I dragged myself into the house from grocery shopping, and
I was tired from carrying so many bags from my Range Rover to the kitchen. I was a tall beautiful woman, so I had no problem leaning forward against the kitchen counter to put away the groceries.
That’s when my cell phone rang.
Hello,
I said, in a tone that was letting this caller know
that I didn’t feel like being bothered or interrupted from putting
away five hundred dollars worth of groceries.
You haven’t left my house yet?
this woman asked, almost
whispering. "Bitch are you crazy?" This woman sounded like she
was trying to talk and cover her mouth at the same time. It was
the weirdest thing I had ever heard over the phone.
My mouth dropped and I frowned, trying to recognize the
voice of the friend that was playing this silly joke on me. I leaned
back against the counter and finally spoke. "Excuse me? Who
is this?"
"Excuse you?"
You have the wrong number,
I said. I was about to hit the off button on my phone.
No, I don’t Debbie,
she said, correcting me, "I don’t have
the wrong number, I don’t think so."
Like a statue, I froze and a chill went over me. This woman
knew my name. Of course, my husband was an NBA All-Star
for the Washington Wizards and of course, we tried to keep our
personal information out of the newspapers as much as possible.
The first thing I thought was maybe she read my name in the
newspaper or a tabloid magazine or something.
Who is this, and how did you get this number,
I asked,
walking out into the middle of my huge kitchen, struggling to
stay calm.
Don’t worry about it—!
No, I am going to worry about it!
What you need to worry about is this,
this woman said,
starting to sound sharp with her words. "As Sidney’s number
one fan, if you don’t move out so that we can be together I’m
going to kill you. Plain and simple as that!"
As it would figure. One of my husband’s crazy NBA groupies
and he had a lot of them. All of them loved Sidney and they all
were his number one fan. I rolled my eyes and just hung up on
her. I sat the phone on the kitchen table and continued putting
away the groceries. The phone started ringing again, this time the house phone and I figured it was this crazy lady calling again. As I put away the groceries it started eating away at me that this crazy fan somehow got our home number. How did she get it?
Of course, we lived in privacy and I tried to make sure of
that. I loved our home. It was perfect for me. Our red-bricked
baby mansion with three garages sat along with other million-dollar homes on Monterey Circle, with the Tantallon Country
Club and Golf Course practically in our backyard. Swan Creek and
one of the lesser-known Fort Washington Marinas sat behind
the houses across the street from us. The beautifully designed
landscaping made our neighborhood look as if we were on a
small, elegant island. I remember one day, I was in another room
when I overheard my father-in-law telling my mother-in-law that
our six thousand square foot million dollar Fort Washington,
Maryland home felt like a
