Gangsta by Circumstance - Anitra Ferguson

    Chapter 1

    The Meeting

Iwasn’t in the mood to partake in an interview, but I had given my word. Where I come from your word is your bond. I gathered my thoughts and followed the officer into the conference room held my hands up so that the officer could unfasten the handcuffs and I took a seat. Across from me sat the woman I assumed would be all up in my business for the next couple of hours or days - however long this shit was going to take. I didn’t bother to introduce myself. The bitch should already know who I am. I just sat there and looked at her until she began the conversation. At least she was cute though... a little slow but cute.

"Hello Miss Webb, my name is Anitra Ferguson. I am a reporter with the local newspaper: The Goodsman Reporter. I am here to gain insight on your story. I feel that the citizens of Goodsman want to know how a young, beautiful woman such as yourself becomes the Queen Pen of the drug scene in this city. They want to know how you managed to become so successful in maintaining control over one the deadliest gangs patrolling the streets, The Goon Squad, I believe it is called? Inquiring minds want to know, Miss Webb, so let us get started. My first question to you is what is your story? How did a beautiful girl like you with so much promise and potential end up in the prison system looking at 25 to life at such a young age?"

"Well, Miss Ferguson… As I sit in my present environment I have a lot of time on my hands to ponder on that very question. I think and replay the situations and decisions I have made. However, let me just correct you on one thing before we continue; my gang or squad as you may call them, is still present and running this city. Nothing has changed, and I am still the HBIC-QUEENBEE. Only the loyal remain! Maybe if I had done this or that different, I wouldn’t be facing this bid of 25 to life at the age of 25.

Yes, I am incarcerated! My government name is Shyla Renee Webb. The streets christened me Red, and I became a gangsta due to my circumstances for survival. However, in my current state, I am known by # 1-2-6-7-8-9-9-8-5. I bet you’re wondering how shit got so off track and so fucked up? You want to hear the story? Well, here it go!

My life had begun to unravel when my grandmother Irene Webb passed away at the age of 12. She was my anchor and the love of my life. I had been an honor student with aspirations of exploring the world. At that time I felt as if I could accomplish any and everything that I set my mind to. I wanted to become a doctor and discover the cure for cancer or do some other phenomenal shit like that. I laugh because my dreams were big and bold. My grandmother had that effect on us. She boosted our confidence so high that we felt as if the world was ours to conquer.

I was so naïve to the ways of this world, so sheltered from the truth of the streets. I grew up in the ghetto born and raised, but my grandmother had kept us in a fantasy world. I had planned out every step of my life. It’s funny though cause life never seems to go like you planned. Some people say if you wanna make God laugh tell him your plans for your life.

Now from where I sit, I believe this is the truth. But enough
