    About the Publisher

    NETTA

Maggy Foster - I had to admit - looked exuberant as she held onto shopping bags, fingering through the clothing rack at the POLO store at Tanger Outlets at the National Harbor. And what I found interesting is that Maggy was carrying it as if she was the most gorgeous woman on the planet. I was checking out a dress when I glanced over and recognized her. I had to stop and do a double-take. Maggy?

I moved toward her, eyeballing her. I called her name again and Maggy almost leaped out of her skin when she heard my voice. She recognized my voice, but she couldn’t put a name to it right away. Maggy Foster, I said, approaching her.

Maggy stopped and looked into my face, expressionless. Of course she remembered me, I was the most popular girl at Friendly High School, class of 2010. I was the same girl that ruined her life.

I gave her the same evil, teasing smile I used to give her in high school. It’s me... Netta.

Looking like she was standing in the presence of an evil but beautiful ghost, Maggy said, Yeah, I . . . I remember you, Netta.

I fell back, laughing, the same awful way I laughed at her back in high school. Maggy was one of my most well-known victims, although I had to admit, she was just as popular as I was.

Maggy stared down at my tiny petite body, not finding anything funny at all.

I said, Oh, my God, Maggy, you haven’t changed, you still look the same, girl.

You haven’t changed much either, Maggy said, biting back. The way she was eyeballing me almost made me laugh. I was sure she remembered the way my crew and I used to tease her.  Still a li’l scrawny thing.

Now it was my turn to bite back. Yeah, but I’m still the prettiest girl in school.

Maggy squinted and frowned, looked at me like she was disappointed or something. "Still the prettiest girl in school? Netta, we graduated ten years ago—what’re you talking about?"

And you’re still tall and goofy-

A little awkward maybe, Maggy said, swinging back her long, thick, pretty hair, "but never was I—one of the most popular girls at Friendly—ever goofy. How could I ever come off as goofy when I was hypnotizing all the boys with my dreamy hazel eyes, girl-

Whatever, I said, still competitive as ever. ‘What-ever. Maybe one of the smartest girls in school. A little popularity going with Craig Blackburn. But definitely the goofiest."

    Whatever.

Yeah, I said. I had a teasing snarl on my face. You still look the same, same gray hair and everything. My snarl turned into a smile.

Maggy shot a cold, daggering stare into my eyes. She said, Of course there was a reason for the early gray hair.

"Maggy, you developed gray hair just before we graduated, right

    after . . ."

We stopped and looked at each other a moment, remembering the tragedy back in high school. I saw the tormented look on Maggy’s face and tucked in my mouth to keep from busting out laughing. Maggy started boiling with rage. "Maggy, you still look like that’s . . . bothering you." My sympathy was laced
