Chapter One
Amanda Slate’s legs first got my attention at Mike’s annual Christmas party. She was wearing one of those short dresses that showed them off—and damn!—firm tan legs that went all the up as my gramps used to say. Can you tell I’m a leg man? Oh, I love the rest of the package on women too, but great legs are what I spot first. Tanned and toned with just the right amount muscle. No stick legs for me. I love a girl with some curves! And Amanda, well, she had all the right ones. Too bad I had no idea who she was at time, would’ve saved all of us a whole lot of trouble.
Hey!
Mike said in my ear as he jabbed an elbow in my ribs.
Ow!
I jumped. Beer sloshed in my festive red plastic tumbler. Dude.
Quit staring at my girlfriend’s ass.
What?
I doubled-taked back to the leggy hottie across the room. That’s Amanda? Holy shit.
Holy shit was right. My best friend, Mike Kalen, had been going on and on about this new girl he’d met a few weeks ago. Most of what he’d blathered on about had filtered through my brain and spilled back out, but I do remember something about her being smart. Like doctor smart. That had stuck because Mike never dated smart girls. Too much trouble, he’d taught me. I wouldn’t say I agreed with him, but I did agree that our college years were for fun and tumbles. Smart was for after graduation.
That’s her!
He grinned and that’s when I really noticed the spark in his eyes.
Didn’t you say she’s applying for med school?
Uh-huh,
he nodded, she’ll find out before we graduate.
He leaned close and whispered, She’s worried, but I know she’ll get accepted.
Yeah?
A cocked an eyebrow while I kept my eyes on her. Amanda hadn’t noticed us talking about her, at least I don’t think she had. Her animated conversation with friends seemed pretty involved. What were they talking about?
Absolutely! Dude, she has like a 4.0 GPA.
Finally I looked at my friend. Then what the hell is she doing with you?
Mike laughed and sipped his rum and Coke. The sex, man.
Right.
I looked at her again. So you guys have…
Oh yeah, and she’s, well…
He blushed and ducked his head.
What?
Mike sighed and shook his head. I can’t, Jay.
Shit. You like her.
Mike’s blush got redder, and he hid behind his drink. She’s awesome.
What happened to bag’em and tag’em?
Well…
I thought we wanted play the field?
Jay, man, you don’t understand. I really like this girl. She’s not like the usual fluff.
Mike,
I grabbed his shoulder, you’re freaking me out.
He pulled away. Don’t be like that. You just have to meet her, then you’ll understand.
I don’t have to meet her. I already get it—was what I wanted to say, but I couldn’t blurt that out to my best friend. Maybe I should’ve. Would’ve fixed a lot things right then.
Amanda, hey!
Mike shouted over the too-loud Christmas music as he dragged me by my shirt toward her.
My heart thundered in my ears, and I pulled away until my shirt choked me. I don’t think—
Mike!
She turned around, waving at my friend, and that’s when it all starting hitting the fan. She was hot. Not the usual sort of magazine model hot—though she had a great body and face—but she just had this aura that screamed fucking gorgeous inside and out.
Mike yanked me forward. Hon, I want you to meet my best friend and frat brother, Jay Branson. Jay, this is my girlfriend, Amanda.
Jay, hi,
she smiled and stuck her right hand out, I’ve heard so much about you!
Um … yeah…
Shaking her hand made mine tingle, along with another part of my body. Haven’t heard anything about you.
What the hell? Why did I say that? Her brilliant smile drooped, and I wanted to bang my head against a wall. I should’ve apologized right then. If I had, maybe everything would’ve turned out differently.
Jay!
Mike punched my shoulder, then turned to Amanda and slipped an arm around her waist. He’s just kidding. I told him about you.
Sure he has. I was just kidding,
I said without conviction. Amanda’s stunning eyes narrowed as she studied me. There was a lot going on behind those eyes. I’ve never felt intimidated by a girl before, but this one peeled back my layers in seconds. My groin tightened, and confusion set in.
Funny.
Her mouth twitched at one corner, then she drank
