I was running late. I knew that. I flew by people on the streets, bumping into a couple of them with a barely-there apology, all I wanted was to get to the enormous building I could see ahead, and my heels were not making it easier. I would be sweaty and red-faced once there, so I forced myself to breathe evenly and try to calm down as the doors opened before me. I had a feeling of being so out of my league. The place was not opulent, but it was professional and minimalistically grand. The one at the reception desk looked at me as if I was in the wrong place.

Hi, how may I help you? Yes, that was totally forced on his part, the guy stared at me from head to toe, and I resisted the urge to fix my hair or clothes.

I’m Sapphire Gorman. I have an appointment, I informed him, his face scrunched for a millisecond. G-O-R-M-A-N, I spelt with a forced small smile.

Yes, eleventh floor, Ms Gorman, here. And he was surprised by the information he was giving me, I saw it in his eyes, and on his tone, it was just an interview for an assistant position, what was the big deal? Though the eleventh floor did seem a bit up, wow! I thought suddenly, as I took the temporary pass and made my way to the elevator. Was this interview for a big shot or something? I shook my head, it couldn’t be, but as I went up and up in that elevator, my nervousness increased. I stared at my reflection and fixed the loose strands of hair, and tried to make the glint in my skin go away, I had sweated quite a bit. I took a deep breath as the elevator stopped, and I had a moment of panicked hesitation because I knew why the guy downstairs was surprised, this floor was definitely close to the higher-ups, and this interview was definitely for something that I had not expected.

I had taken an open spot for this interview, someone had backed out, and I was called because I knew the one in charge of organising these things, a friend of a friend, and I was beginning to think that he was probably having a laugh right now for sending me here. Just as minimalistic as the ground floor, the comfortable executive chairs were many, but only four were occupied, three girls and a guy with nothing but pristine clothes, it was like they were CFO’s or something. I didn’t look awful, but the blazer back at my apartment should perhaps have made it all the way to this interview with me. Okay, relax, you’re fine. I tried to calm myself as I sat next to the last girl from the door, assuming she was the last to come in. I looked around, taking in the floor, it had a couple of aisles that I assumed were stacked with offices for HR or something similar; there was no reception here, so whatever was beyond door number 1 had to be it, the place where my fate would be sealed, I was overreacting I knew, but the pressure was on, I held my folder close to me as if it were a lifeline, and counted from twenty-one down and back up again, it was strangely calmly, and it always had been. When I was in my fourth round going number seven up, the girl that had been next to me, came out of the magical door, and I realised I was next. No one called my name, but there was no one else, and the door was open.

I stepped inside and the sound of the door clicking behind sounded like my fate was being completely sealed. I really need to relax, and by some mystic will, I did. I blazed through the interview, and even though I didn’t have much experience, at least I knew how to hold my own and how to sell my working attributes. I went home in a state of surrealism. I couldn’t believe that I had been inside Twin Cities corporation, actually had an interview there, for an assistant job, for who? I had no clue, yet, only being inside the place had been mind-blowing. It was one of the highest-profile companies in town, and getting a job there, well, it could be amazing. So, I sighed in relief and disbelieve went I got home.

I spent the day in a haze and went to bed early. The next morning was the top of the sundae. My hands trembled as I read the email in my inbox. I got the job? That question was on repeat in my head. I just couldn’t believe it, then I jumped up and down my room for about ten minutes before reading the rest of the message, I was to begin immediately as in the next day immediately, and that was no time at all. Still, I had to do it, and whatever I had planned would have to wait, like seeing my parents coming down for the week to see me, they would have to wait until the weekend or come back later.

I stared at the number twelve on my permanent ID, Level 12. I was going to work on that floor, as in the last floor of the building, as in the place where the bosses were, as in I was going to be the assistant of one of the higher-ups, no pressure there. They worked fast around the place, the middle-aged woman who gave me the ID and ran me through the floors and what I had to do, which was basically whatever the one I was assisting wanted, she quickly went through security safety tips and exits, and then presented me with a two-page form for me to sign in addition to my six months contract, not much but it was half a test period time, half an I-was-on-the-job-for-the-long-run kind of thing. I couldn’t leave for those six months, and they couldn’t fire me even if I sucked, but if I survived, I would be looking at a steady two years contract next.

Are you done reading the loyalty statement, Miss Gorman? The what? I looked at the two pages in front of me, oh yes, a loyalty statement I had to sign. Any questions? she lost her patience as I read through it quickly. It’s very straightforward, you cannot divulge any current deals being done, any new clients interested in a partnership with another existent client, and you cannot divulge anything said on the twelfth floor. Nothing that you might hear, no matter what it is, they expect complete discretion. She finished, and that just made me blink like a moron, what if they were discussing murder or something. I signed the papers and the contract without voicing my questions because the pay was ridiculously good, and I was actually excited about working in the place, no matter what the position entailed. Look for Ms Glass once you’re there. She’ll be the lonesome one. And I could swear the woman was fighting a smile, what had I gotten myself into? She’ll tell you what you need to do.

I thanked her and went to the elevator, I was on the fourth
