VALERIE’S FATHER INSISTS on her taking a summer job at his law firm before finishing her last year at university.  Once there, she is assigned to work for Foster Montgomery—a man who will only date escorts.

    Chapter 1

The wrinkles on his forehead deepened, gouging out a river of anger as his eyes narrowed. Arguing with my father was pointless. He was a lawyer, not just your average lawyer; he was one of the country’s top litigators. He wasn’t the type of man who lost a fight.

    I surrendered.

My summer would be spent working at his firm before returning to university. An epic summer that I could look back on for the rest of my life was out of the question. Chloe, my best friend, was sure to be disappointed, to say the least.

I TOOK SPECIAL CARE to close my bedroom door. A display of anger was unacceptable. Maybe that was why my mother left. How those two ever thought they were compatible, I’ll never know. Never has there been two people that were more opposite. My father was a measured man, carefully weighing his words and options. My mother was short-fused, quick to say something she would soon regret, and never thought twice about anything she said.

I shot Chloe a quick text message asking her to call as soon as she had a chance. Before I could flop onto my bed, the phone rang, hey. I was pretty sure my tone answered her next question.

He said no, didn’t he? she snorted.

It seems my summer would be better spent working at the firm, I
