I sat back in the chair and gazed at my computer as the words were said over and over in my head and the sound of the rain outside my office window surrounded me. I couldn't look away from my discovery, which was less a discovery and more of an intrusion that was now burned into my brain like the sight of a thousand dead bodies piled on top of each other. I wanted to look away. I wanted to shut down my computer and go home early with a lie about having an upset stomach or bad allergies, but my curiosity got the best of me, and I read on.
The world stopped as I read the disturbing report that I wasn’t meant to see, but was yet right there in front of me from an email address I'd never seen. I closed my eyes in hopes that when I opened them it would all have been a lie, but it was all too real. I couldn't think anymore and processing this information seemed impossible, but yet I was trying.
I walked over to my small refrigerator that I sat in the very back corner of my office next to a dead plant. I kept a bottle of scotch there that I never used but kept for some reason. It was a Christmas gift from one of the higher ups but I never got around to taking it home. I closed my eyes as I opened the bottle for the first time and took a few small sips. It was like taking a punch to the head; I needed that feeling to take away from the result of opening that email.
I need a cigarette
I mumbled to myself as I search my desk for my pack. Bingo
I said as I found them in the very back behind an almost empty bottle of red wine.
I rushed out of my office as though there was a fire, so much so that I noticed a few weird looks from my coworkers as I almost ran past them. I wondered if any of them had gotten the email too. I wondered if I was the only one, and I really hoped I wasn't.
It took a while for the elevator to arrive at my floor and it seemed to take even longer for it to go from the tenth floor to the first, and I almost hyperventilated during the ride. Once outside, the sun started to bring me back to normal as I list my cigarette and took the first puff. I did it a few more times before I even allowed the word email to enter into my thoughts.
What the fuck do I do?
I whisper to myself as I watch the smoke surround me and then blow away.
What I knew for sure was that I couldn't simply ignore what I'd seen. I also knew that the rest of that email could be far worse than the first. That thought brought a shiver down my spine and caused me not to move for a while. I was paralyzed. I also knew that this needed to be a secret for now, at least mostly a
