    Chapter 1

Mylo the cat was born with the softest, shiniest black coat. Most of the other cats in the magic community were jealous of his sleek appearance and his red leather collar with the silver bell. Mylo loved to stroll around the neighbourhood with his head held high, enjoying their admiring glances.

Mylo lived with Hattie; she was one of the younger witches in the magic community of Farthinglen. He loved to sit beside her when she prepared her special potions. The one that glowed yellow and smelt like smoked haddock interested him most. The bubbly pink one that held a promising hint of chicken was his second favourite. He was always tempted to get a sneaky sip.

One morning Mylo thought that day’s mix smelt wonderful. It was like nothing he’d ever smelt before. Standing on his hind legs he leaned against the kitchen counter sniffing. He was just about to jump up as usual when Hattie waved her mixing wand at him, ‘Keep your nose, paws, and whiskers out of this potion. It’s very special and is definitely NOT meant for cats!’

Giving him her special, you’d better not push your luck mister, look she added, ‘You never know what might happen if you let your natural cat curiosity get the better of you!’

Mylo couldn’t speak Witch but understood every word Hattie said. Hattie didn’t speak Cat but understood Mylo’s ways of communicating. She smiled and nodded as he replied with a gentle purr.

Still curious, and believing today’s potion promised extreme deliciousness, he rubbed against her legs mewing pleadingly. She added another ingredient saying, ‘Stop that Mylo, this is definitely not one for you.’

Just then the doorbell rang. Hattie dashed to the door squawking, ‘Oh lorks-a-diddly, I hope it’s my delivery. I need the silver concentrate and distilled nettle juice to finish this mix for my customer. He ordered it three weeks ago. Eish, it should have been done by now.’

She grabbed her package from the courier then hurried back to the kitchen worried her mix would boil over. She got to the pot just in time to give it a quick stir then turn down the heat.

At that very moment Mylo’s curiosity overwhelmed
