Frog marched across the tarmac, the hot Mohave sun beating down on her fatigues. She had just arrived at Camp 23, eager to begin training with the new Mark II mechs. Though only a second lieutenant, Frog was determined to advance through the ranks quickly.

As she approached Hangar B, Frog eyed the gleaming prototype mechs standing tall and proud along the far wall. Techs in grease-stained coveralls buzzed around their feet, making last-minute adjustments and tweaks.

Lieutenant Hayes, over here! called a gruff voice.

Frog turned to see Master Sergeant Muto waving her over. She had met him briefly during her officer training, though his permanent scowl made it hard to forget the man.

Yes, Sergeant? Frog said, standing at attention.

Muto looked her up and down. Eager to get started, I see. Well, let's not waste any time. This is the Mark II you'll pilot for today's training.

Frog gazed up at the mech appreciatively. Nine feet tall, composite armor, a 20mm cannon - this was leagues beyond anything she had trained with before.

She's a real beaut, Frog said. What's her top speed?

Thirty miles per hour, thanks to the rear thruster pack, Muto said. But don't go getting any funny ideas, Lieutenant. I'll be monitoring your progress from the control room.
