Thank you for taking time to read this script! For those who have followed my work for the last seven years, you’re aware of the fact that I typically publish novels and short stories in the genre of Christian & Urban fiction. INTRODUCTION
INT. OFFICE BUILDING . DAY
It’s a warm summer morning in Gainesville, Florida as NAOMI ANDERSON walks into the main lobby of a crowded office building in the middle of downtown. Naomi is sitting in a chair between two people, holding a folder with several documents inside of it as she waits to speak to a representative at one of the front windows. After several minutes, a tall, average sized black woman who appeared to be close to her mid-fifties, with dark, curly hair enters the lobby to call the next person.
FEMALE ASSOCIATE
Ticket number 5784!
NAOMI
Yes, that’s me!
(Naomi hands the woman her ticket number)
FEMALE ASSOCIATE
Okay, Dianna is waiting for you at the second window over here.
NAOMI
Wait, I’m looking to speak with Linda Collins.
LINDA
I’m Linda Collins. Did you have an appointment with me?
NAOMI
No ma’am, I don’t.
LINDA
Who referred you to me?
NAOMI
It was the bus driver, I don’t know his name.
LINDA
Why would a bus driver tell you to find me?
NAOMI
I asked him where I could go to legally have my name changed. He told me to come here and ask for you. Can you help me?
(Linda sighs before glancing over at Dianna)
LINDA
DIANNA, call the next number. I’m going to take her with me! Follow me young lady.
(Naomi follows Linda to her office at the end of the hall and takes a seat in front of desk, while Linda sits at her computer)
NAOMI
Can I get some water, please?
LINDA
Yes. Here you go.
NAOMI
Thank you.
LINDA
You’re welcome. You want to do a legal name change?
NAOMI
Yes ma’am. Here’s my application and the documents you need.
LINDA
You came all the way here from Chicago?
NAOMI
Yes. I just got off the Greyhound this morning.
LINDA
Wow, you’re eighteen?
NAOMI
Yes ma’am.
LINDA
Did you graduate high school this year?
NAOMI
Yes, I actually just graduated two weeks ago.
LINDA
You’re the same age as my youngest son. He graduated too. What brings you to Gainesville, Florida?
NAOMI
I just need to start over. That’s why I’m changing my name.
LINDA
Naomi Mariah Anderson. That's a beautiful name, Naomi means pleasant. Why would you want to change it?
NAOMI
I just need to do it.
LINDA
Okay. Well, this looks like everything we need to process your request.
NAOMI
Okay, great.
LINDA
Oh my God!
NAOMI
What’s wrong?
LINDA
I’m sorry.
NAOMI
What is it?
LINDA
You’re changing your name to Mara Tyranny Anderson?
NAOMI
Yes. What’s the big deal?
LINDA
You don’t know?
NAOMI
It doesn’t matter.
LINDA
But it does matter. Your name is what gives you identity.
NAOMI
