Chapter 1
A screenshot of a phone Description automatically generatedAstory that emphasizes the value of free will and the consequences of our decisions is the biblical account of Cain and Abel. Although Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve, their free will choices led to significant changes in their lives.
Abel dedicated himself to the care of the flocks as a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the land and took care of the crops. Both decided to offer God a part of their products at any given time. Abel presented the best of his flock, including the portions of fat, while Cain offered an offering of fruits and vegetables. It is important to note that God gave Cain and Abel total freedom to decide what to offer, without imposing any rules on them.
God gladly accepted Abel's offering but rejected Cain's. This caused in Cain an intense pain for his brother's rejection, thus feeding feelings of resentment, jealousy, and anger. In his infinite wisdom, God spoke to Cain to confront what was happening in his heart. Why are you angry?
He asked. Why do you have that expression of sadness? If you follow the right path, won't you be accepted? However, sin is stalking your door, wanting to dominate you. You must control it.
Cain ended up killing his brother. Through the story of Cain and Abel, we learn important things and we can see how his heart's intentions were exposed to adversity.
This story teaches us how we should be careful with the feelings, emotions and desires of the flesh that are contrary to the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
