About this ebook

The title of this series is Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage. It consists of two books and twenty lessons that follow the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. We will explore the significant events that happened to them at the mountain sites along their pilgrimage. Our main sources will be the biblical books of Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua. We will discover that the challenges and lessons that the Israelites faced are relevant for us today as we also seek to follow God's will. Therefore, we should pay close attention to their experiences and learn from their successes and failures, as we encounter many obstacles, risks, and temptations on our way.

Another major goal of this course is to examine different aspects of the doctrine of salvation. Every keyword in this course reveals a new insight into the biblical meaning of salvation.

Salvation in the Bible is more than just the rebirth of the human spirit. Many problems in the lives of Christians can be attributed to a lack of understanding of the doctrine of salvation. If we do not grasp all that God has done for us in salvation, we will struggle unnecessarily. The doctrine of salvation pervades this entire course. We will look at salvation from different perspectives and appreciate its richness and depth. God's desire is for us to experience complete salvation. God wants us to be saved in every way: spirit, soul, and body; past, present, and future; from the penalty, power, and presence of sin. That is God's mission: complete salvation.

These two books with twenty chapters/lessons can be used for personal study or group teaching.

    1: Salvation

This series is entitled: Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage. This course traces the journey of the people of Israel, from out of the land of Egypt, into the land of Canaan. We will visit the people of Israel at the prominent peaks of their pilgrimage. Our main texts will come from the bible books of Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua. We shall see that the events that befell the children of Israel at the mountain sites are the very things that we have to expect on our pilgrimage. The lessons that the people of Israel had to learn are the very same lessons that our loving Lord would have us learn also. So, it behooves us to take a close look at the Lord's people and their pilgrimage, so that we can be better fit for our pilgrimage, for there are many pitfalls, dangers, and perils.

The keyword for lesson number one is salvation. The main purpose of this course is to look at several aspects of the doctrine of salvation. Every keyword in this course brings out a new revelation concerning salvation, from a biblical viewpoint. The prominent peak of our study today is Mount Horeb. Another name for Horeb is Mount Sinai, in the Sinai Peninsula.

Exodus 3:7 And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 3:8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3:9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 3:10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 3:11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 3:12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

So, here we find Moses, shepherding sheep in the bleakness of the wilderness. For forty years, Moses has been enjoying a settled family life in the country. At this prominent peak, he encounters God, Jehovah, Yahweh, the great I AM. He is divinely commissioned to go down to Egypt and to bring the people of Israel, up out of Egypt. And the sign that God gives him is that the congregation of Israel would serve God at this mountain site, Mount Sinai. God would perform his Word. God would work his will and bring it to fulfillment. In this biblical story, Egypt is a type or picture of the worldly system into which the Israelites were born. So, as we go through this course, remember that Egypt is a picture of the worldly matrix.

Our keyword, salvation, means deliverance and preservation. Whenever God talks about the saving of the human soul, he always means it in the context of whole or complete salvation. Of course, there is the kind of salvation that is temporary salvation, as in getting somebody out of a dire situation or circumstance. That is temporary salvation. In this course, we are talking about the salvation of a soul, from Satan's kingdom into the Kingdom of Light. And this kind of salvation is designed to be everlasting and complete. Salvation covers more than just the regeneration of the Spirit. Many struggles in the lives of God’s people can be traced to unfamiliarity concerning the doctrine of salvation. If we do not see all that the Lord has done in salvation, then we will have fears and unnecessary struggles. Now, although salvation is our key theme in lesson one, the doctrine of salvation really permeates through this entire course. We are going to turn salvation over and look at the subject in all its fullness.

Now, there are three parts to our lesson today. Number One: They were Serving the Pharaoh; Number Two: They were Seen in Pity, and Number Three: They were Sent a Promise.

Number One: They were Serving the Pharaoh.

They were serving the Pharaoh. Who was serving the Pharaoh? The children of Israel were serving the Pharaoh: the king of Egypt. We are going to see through this course, that the physical events that occurred to the children of Israel, have spiritual meaning and significance. Their lessons contain principles that we can apply to our lives. The Israelites found themselves in a realm of bondage. A natural sinner finds himself in the same realm of bondage before he comes to salvation.

In our text it says, And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people, which are in Egypt.

So, we see that they are in Egypt and that they are God's people. God as creator owns every single human being. He made every single human being. He brings every single human being into this world. And as creator, every human being belongs to God. Everyone can say that God is their Creator. However, not everyone is in a bona fide relationship with God. Not everyone can say that Jehovah is their Father. The Israelites are a nation of people, and they are special in the eyes of God. And we see that they were serving harsh taskmasters. And have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows. God had made these people for himself. God as creator, has created everyone for himself. God has created everyone for his pleasure. And every human being ought to be serving God. But here we find in materialistic Egypt, that God's people were serving harsh taskmasters.

The Pharaoh is a picture or symbol of the dark king, over the worldly matrix. All of these people that belong to God are working themselves to death. This is man's plight before salvation. This is the plight of a sinner before they come to an awakening. People are under harsh taskmasters. Dark forces, and the sinful nature, hold them in bondage and make life miserable. These people in Egypt were dysfunctional because they were born into a world of servitude to dark forces. These were dysfunctional because they were not fulfilling the real purpose of their lives, which was to live in harmony with the divine Spirit.

God said to Moses, I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians. I will deliver them. And when God said that he had in mind, complete deliverance, and complete preservation. God was not going to leave them in that worldly system, under bondage, serving harsh taskmasters. He was not going to leave them in that situation. He said he was going to bring them out. Salvation means to be rescued out from: to be taken out from one place unto another. For instance, somebody falls into a torrential river. They are being swept down the river. They are nearing the waterfall. Somebody on the bank throws a rope, and that struggling person in the water grabs hold of that rope. The person on the bank pulls and pulls and pulls upon that rope to bring that drowning wretch out of that surging water. The person is rescued out from certain peril. Salvation is being rescued out from.

Again, a lady is caught in a burning building on the fifth floor, and she is screaming for help. The flames are converging, and the roof is about to collapse upon her. A fire truck pulls up outside and a fireman climbs up a ladder to the window, gets a hold of her, and takes her out of the burning building. She is rescued out from a perilous situation. That is what salvation is.

When God saves somebody, he does not leave them under bondage to Satan or sin. He takes them out of that situation. Sin is what God rescues people from. Man has a sinful nature. It is not just the sins that a man does, that make him a sinner: but he has a sinful nature. The dark side of his nature is the real root of his problem. Man's carnal nature is the beast that is going to keep him out of Heaven. The ego nature is going to keep him separated from God. And God has to rescue that soul from Adamic sin. All men and women are born in Adam’s line, being spiritually dead to God. Every natural person is void of God's Holy Spirit and separated from his Creator. The Holy Spirit is the life that the sinful person needs.

The Bible tells us that sin affects the whole of man's being. Man is made in three parts: spirit, soul, and body. The human spirit is void of God's life. The soul is dysfunctional because it is not fulfilling the divine purpose. And the body is on a drawn-out death ride. God's salvation corrects these effects of sin. This topic is what we are going to visit over the length of this course. God's salvation corrects these three effects of sin, in the spirit, in the soul, and in the body.

Furthermore, salvation deals with the penalty, the power, and the presence of sin. Man is under the penalty of sin: he faces harsh consequences for disobedience.
