    About the Author

The thoroughfare lay beneath their feet, yet Rado, dispirited by the tribulations of academia, could not shake the discernment that the cobblestone path differed in its essence. The pavement is somehow different, he murmured, almost soliloquizing, his demeanor devoid of the usual buoyancy.

Even the pavement is different, Rado reiterated, a lament to an unseen struggle.

And how is that of significance? inquired Taro, her voice resonating with strength, an echo of a formidable ancient warrior embodied in her tall, dark-skinned, athletic frame. A mere inclination of her inflection conveyed an assertiveness beyond words.

If the pavement fulfills its purpose, its divergence matters little, she declared, challenging the importance attributed to the subtle discrepancy.

Good or bad kind of different? posed Inga, a delicate figure with an ethereal countenance, her pallor defying convention. Her sky-blue eyes, seemingly ever-dreamy, betrayed an absorption detached from immediate reality, seemingly oblivious to Taro's brusque remark.

I don't know, Inga, responded Rado. And therein lies the crux. It differs in a manner beyond my comprehension—an unfamiliarity that arrests my attention.

A wry observation prompted Ryan, a short and ginger individual of quick wit, to express his skepticism. Well, I must confess that the pavement argument does not impress me much. Pavements are all the same, anywhere you go. That is one of the things you cannot find culturally relative.

Haha, and how do you know? retorted Taro, her laughter echoing through the air. How many pavements have you observed to make such a claim? It is all the same to you because it is your pavement, Ryan! After all, we are all in your country! At home, everything is boringly well-known! A collective burst of laughter ensued.

The quartet, bound by a fortuitous convergence, meandered aimlessly after a day of scholarly discourse. A shared impulse led them to traverse an unfamiliar trajectory, distinguished from the predictable trajectories of their peers. Their camaraderie, seemingly arbitrary, bore the weight of a peculiar connection.

Not exactly, Ryan interjected. We are in a place that people think is my country, and maybe it is, in a way, but that is definitely not the place I would call home.

Inga, her expression veiled in confusion, sought clarification. What do you mean? Can you be in your own country and still be away from home?

Sure you can! interjected Taro with swiftness. Shielding her eyes from the lingering sun, she surveyed the surroundings with a purpose known only to her. Home is a place of the heart; Ryan was implying this when he spoke of his country, I am sure. We do not feel we belong to politically established unions but to places with the spirit and the essence we carry within our hearts. Home is not a name on the map; it is a birthmark on the soul.

A contemplative silence enveloped them as they continued their journey. Taro's gaze remained vigilant, as if searching for significance in the unnoticed corners of the world.

Well, I don't know. We are a strange mix of people here. We all come from different places, so maybe the pavement does look different to all of us, and even more, it is different in a different way for each and every one of us, Ryan conceded, unexpectedly aligning with the profound observations of his companions.

Indeed. – The resplendent maiden spoke, her countenance adorned with a semblance of mirth, yet her musings delved into a more somber realm. - There exists no alternative emotional response for the immigrant but to coalesce in profound conviction with those equally estranged, concurring in the sentiment of non-belonging. The immigrant's cognitive faculties, in their natural proclivity, transgress the prescribed order of perception in the new terrain, rendering the unfamiliar a captivating alternate reality, more enthralling and perplexing than the one native to them. Within the unfamiliar, even the mundane assumes an aspect of singularity and peculiarity, as evidenced by Rado's inadvertent observation of the pavement. To those entrenched in their native soil, all appears commonplace and intimate, so much so that it eludes conscious notice.

    - Why is that so? - Rado, initially propelling the discourse as a mere diversion during their leisurely sojourn, grew progressively earnest regarding the subject at hand. - I propose, why not delve into this matter, as our erudite counterparts in the Library assuredly would! – His remark ignited a chorus of laughter. – No jest, I contend it merits exploration. Let us endeavor to articulate what it truly means to each of us to be an immigrant! If we are to embrace and navigate our current status as expatriates, we must scrutinize the presence or absence of certain facets of reality we anticipate encountering, thereby unraveling our latent idiosyncrasies and the innate commonalities embedded in diverse perspectives.

    - N'est-ce pas? - Taro enfolded her words with a smile, finding the subject both amusing and evidently thought-provoking. - And now, precipitation descends upon us. - Her satisfaction derived from the rain diverted her reflections into a novel, unforeseen direction. - What are your perceptions of the rain, my foreign companions? Does it strike you as distinct, akin to the pavement it gently caresses?

    - A nuanced question. - Ryan, the orator this time, declared. - How can the non-artificial deviate? Our distinctions hinge solely on cultural and societal backgrounds, yet we share a commonality as humans, subject, among other elements constituting objective reality, to identical environmental and atmospheric influences as all creatures on this orb. Rain, universal to all living entities, persists despite mankind's tribulations with habits, precepts, and convictions.

The drizzle commenced its hushed descent, tenderly brushing the countenances of the contemplative thinkers.

    - Do you then concede that our distinctions are not universal and inherent but rather circumscribed, contingent predominantly upon our societal circumstances? – Taro, her fervor for the conversation escalating, inquired with increasing solemnity. - Are we diverse, yet anchored in the same rudiments; fashioned upon an identical foundation, coexisting within the continuum of time and space, irrespective of disparities in ideation or comportment?

    - Indeed. - Inga, resolute and succinct, decided to join the discourse she had observed from a distance until that juncture. - How do we presently communicate? Were we bereft of the shared capability to access, assimilate, and disseminate information, discourse between us would remain an insurmountable feat. Yet, we possess a discernible proficiency in this regard, I venture to posit.

    - Proficiencies, however, are but vacuous vessels awaiting the infusion of experience, nothing more, would you not agree, Inga? - Ryan bestowed upon the woman an intense gaze, replete with admiration and an eagerness for discourse. - We are disparate, and Rado's assertion holds true; we can scarcely fathom the extent of our dissimilarity until we endeavor to comprehend one another through the conduit of shared communication. Only then do we uncover the unforeseen, the hitherto unimaginable possibilities.

    - Precisely where I initiated this discourse. - Rado responded contemplatively. - I harbored uncertainties regarding my ability to articulate the concept of difference when I invoked it. My hasty footsteps tracing the contours of a street in a land far removed from home stirred an emotion and recollection of a myriad of diverse sojourns and a spectrum of sentiments. My utterance materialized as a sudden realization, an emotion hitherto confined to the realm of the unexpressed, rather than a lucid thought articulated as a reasoned argument. Yet, once uttered, it metamorphosed into a judgment amid the transformative process that communication facilitates, transmuting emotion into logical proposition—an invitation to debate. Instinctively, we discerned in the ostensibly innocuous statement about the pavement a profound allusion to our immigrant condition. We transcended the variance of the pavement into an insight into the distinctiveness of those perceiving it, elucidating the latter in its most overt manifestation—the unshared and distinctive origins we embody. This verity demands our acknowledgment with lucid minds, for immigration perennially melds cognition and emotion into a current of negativity, compelling comprehension and acceptance.

A cadre of animated scholars traversed by, casting quizzical glances upon the quartet. The entire academic assembly was converging toward the Old Library, the deviation of our protagonists conspicuous amid the elevated throng.

    - Can discourse alleviate this sense of displacement? – Ryan queried, as if in search of solace himself.

    - Well, I posit, it can. – Inga affirmed, ruminating aloud. – Dialogue is the organic expression of a cogitation seeking liberation from the recesses of the mind, where it languishes until liberated. Despite the manifold ways a singular thought may be communicated, the spontaneous exchange amongst humans, I contend, is the paramount conduit for breathing life into the contents of the mind. Veracity may lie dormant within the pages of antiquated tomes, awaiting the sagacious to approach it with reverence, yet it succumbs to
