    About the Author

In the hallowed confines of the university yard, an animated discourse was suddenly hushed by an incongruous intrusion. A telephone's insistent ring broke the intellectual reverie. The youthful voice on the other end, belonging to one Pascal, resonated with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension as he engaged in dialogue with the venerable Professor Somerset.

Professor Somerset, indeed, Pascal's voice rose, now tinged with visible disquiet, an ominous foreboding hanging in the air. I can discern your words with utmost clarity.

The subject of Pascal's academic thesis loomed ominously, causing him to falter. Engrossed in the rigors of a taxing examination on Modern Political Theories, he had not granted his thesis due consideration. It was evident that his indifference had not gone unnoticed by the unseen interlocutor, whose demeanor betrayed a palpable disdain.

With the attentive assembly of students bearing witness, the invisible interlocutor proceeded to expound upon their directives. The audience strained to decipher the professor's barbed discourse. Pascal, pen and paper in hand, listened intently and jotted down a succinct query. A single sentence, brief and enigmatic.

I shall attend to it promptly, sir, Pascal announced solemnly before concluding the call. His countenance revealed a blend of relief and vexation, which left the onlookers agog.

Questions and murmurs cascaded through the sunlit campus, as eager minds sought to decipher the cryptic assignment. But Pascal's focus had shifted. Overwhelmed by the professor's unexpected edict, he fumed, I cannot fathom this! What manner of topic is this? It is absurd!

Disregarding the clamoring crowd, he singled out a face and beckoned it closer. Diego! Pascal's summons was heeded promptly by a striking figure, whose ice-cold gaze met Pascal's. Their presence was a striking contrast, both physically and intellectually. Pascal exuded classical refinement, his dark, lean visage endowed with an intensity akin to that of a Greek deity. Diego, on the other hand, resembled a Viking warlord, a colossus among men.

Diego, Pascal confided in a hushed tone, we must depart.

The conspicuous pair made their exit, a bevy of curious onlookers attempting to blend into the background. What transpired with Professor Somerset? Diego inquired, his curiosity piqued.

Their physical allure aside, the two friends were renowned for their intellectual prowess. Pascal, now displaying a wry grin, divulged, To expound upon the 'need for government.'

Diego, displaying enthusiasm for the task, clapped his hands with delight. But Pascal's expression soon shifted, betraying deep-seated doubts. It appears simple on the surface, he mused, yet, Diego, the professor's query conceals depths beyond the superficial. The need for government—a question that eludes facile answers.

Their footsteps guided them instinctively to the Faculty Library, an integral part of their daily ritual. As they traversed their well-trodden path, the atmosphere was charged with a sense of purpose.

Diego probed, Can it truly be as you inscribed earlier, a matter so deceptively straightforward? Would Professor Somerset pose a question of such unanswerable magnitude?

Pascal's laughter filled the air, a knowing and mirthful response to Diego's inquiry. Indeed, my friend, the task assigned to me was not as it seemed. The formulation in that note transcends mere simplicity. It beckons to traditional philosophical conundrums, and I can respond in no other manner.

Diego chuckled heartily at this revelation, recognizing the inimitable intellect of his companion. Shall you challenge the professor, then?

Pascal, his countenance radiating an ineffable light, replied with a sense of purpose. Respectfully, yet resolutely, with a formidable array of arguments, he affirmed. The two friends set forth, prepared to embark on a journey that would unravel the enigma of the need for government. Their expedition would lead them beyond the confines of conventional wisdom, guiding them from the annals of philosophy to the contemporary realities that their university and its educators seemed intent on sidestepping.

Diego, reveling in Pascal's fervor, knew that his friend's indefatigable spirit and indomitable intellect would ultimately prevail. With unwavering determination, they vowed to delve deep into the intricacies of the government's necessity, setting forth on a quest that promised to redefine conventional paradigms.

Their destination, the Faculty Library, lay just around the corner, awaiting their exploration, as did a customary luncheon in the canteen. But this was no ordinary day; an air of mystery enveloped their journey.

Diego, ever curious, could not resist asking, Shall we keep this riddle shrouded in secrecy?

Pascal, his eyes gleaming with intrigue, responded, No, Diego, we shall unveil the solution. We shall dissect the enigma of the government's necessity, transcending conventional thinking and returning from the wisdom of the past to the exigencies of the present day.

Diego, acknowledging his friend's passion and the inexhaustible fire that fueled him, laughed heartily at the prospect. The topic, it appeared, was indeed beneath Pascal's intellectual pursuits, but it was a challenge he was more than willing to embrace.

Shall we begin with the Faculty Library and then proceed to the canteen, as is our custom? Pascal sketched their itinerary in the air.

Of course, my friend, Diego concurred. And let us engage with the brilliant minds who convene there, for today, our discourse shall revolve around a question that defies facile answers.

In the midst of their intellectual musings, the youthful companions continued on their path, their laughter now subsiding, their contemplative demeanor taking hold.

Are we forgoing the tomes for discourse alone? Diego queried with an air of bemusement. Is this your novel strategy for embarking on the tedium of a university project?

Pascal, his demeanor now earnest, responded, Indeed, you may say so. The thoughts of others need not validate my independent thinking, do they? Must I perpetually seek refuge in the hallowed halls of established authority each time I endeavor to express a conviction I hold dear?

With a steadily growing gravity, Pascal continued, I maintain that I possess the capacity to engage in solitary contemplation and, through my powers of speculation, construct a persuasive argument. The revered minds of past eras exist to instruct us in the art of holistic and independent thought, enabling us to craft reasoned and cohesive propositions. Yet, these luminaries should not cast a shadow upon the current intellectual landscape, for they cannot fathom the present as we who inhabit it can. Therefore, it is our solemn duty to engage in autonomous thought, aided but not governed by the musings of those who have gone before. It is not a matter of disrespect, but rather a recognition of their temporal disconnect. We must dare to think our own thoughts, for they alone offer a true reflection of the ever-unfolding present.

Diego, attuned to his friend's sentiments, offered his affirmation, Seek the guidance of ancient masters to hone our philosophical acumen, but let our intellects operate independently of any influence that might cloud the clarity of our perception.

Indeed, Pascal concurred, delighted that his unconventional approach found favor with Diego. In my view, a philosopher, above all, embodies courage, the willingness to challenge prevailing notions, to transcend the visible and the mundane. It is the fusion of unadulterated reason with the spark of creativity, a fusion that yields an understanding of the world—precise, communicable, and deductive, yet, at the same time, prophetic, abstract, and enigmatic. A philosopher serves as a visionary, a beacon poised at the intersection of exact science and speculative artistry, reaching for a future that no other has envisioned. Thus, I believe each era requires its own seers, its scientists, its poets, for no other time before or after can be grasped in precisely the manner that the present affords us.

Your personal quest has begun, it seems, Diego observed, nodding as if in a quiet trance.

Before them, the imposing marble edifice of one of the university's libraries stood, its grandeur unyielding in the face of the friends' newfound revelations. The hubbub of activity within the corridors, animated by the ceaseless movement of people, suggested a life of its own.

The library served as a sanctuary for a diverse congregation. Students, by far the most populous, were joined by professors and staff, each engrossed in individual scholarly pursuits. Silence reigned here, the hushed whispers of conversation serving as lifelines, guiding readers back
