About this ebook

"The standard dog is seen as a Golden Labrador, so everything is designed for them. Golden Labradors are the measure by which every other dog is compared. Even though the system was designed for Golden Labradors, they too suffer because of its invisible rules and harmful practices."

    The Petriarchy - Lynne Crawford

    CHAPTER 1

    TEDDY

Allow me to introduce to you an unstoppable force. The bravest, most courageous dog leader the world had ever met, they just couldn’t see it yet.

Teddy was an original. He was brave, kind and creative. Teddy was an ambitious and independent dog, who wanted to be free to choose how he lived his life. He was a leader, an inspiration and a joy to be around.

So why was fitting in so terribly difficult for him?

Teddy was born and raised in the Dog Rescue Centre and never knew his dog parents. This start in life meant Teddy didn’t see his true self-worth. But, his human family, the McMoonfords, were working hard to help him see it.

Teddy moved in with the McMoonfords when he was four years old and they meant the world to him. Especially his human Mum. Teddy thought the crook of Mum’s legs was designed for him to snuggle into. Mum was the only one who ever made him feel like he didn’t have to hide any part of himself to fit in. She didn’t tell him what he should do. She didn’t judge or criticise him. She just rubbed his tummy and told him he was a ‘good boy’. It made him glow on the inside.

Teddy loved to do dog things, too. He loved to play with his ball, run through the sea and cover himself in lots of mud on country walks. He loved to run through the freshly cut grass and pretend he was the Hulk when his paws stained green. He loved tug of war, especially with the McMoonford kids because he could usually win!

Teddy loved his freedom and independence so much that he jumped the garden wall every day to take himself off on adventures.

On the inside Teddy was full of bravery, intelligence and adventure – a wild child!

Is he a Labrador? you ask. I bet he’s one of those working Labradors with lean muscles and an obedient attitude.

Er, no. Teddy was a Toy Poodle who loved to be silly. He had been known to wear a bow tie on occasion!

    I bet you giggled there.

How could a dainty dog be all these things?

Surely it was only Labradors who were brave, wild and adventurous, was it not?

Let me blow your mind for a moment. Did you know that in the past Poodles were hunting dogs? Their distinctive haircut was designed to keep their shoulders warm when they hunted ducks in the cold water. Poodles were even circus performers!

Seems there’s a lot you didn’t know about Poodles, so we best get started.

    CHAPTER 2

    THE SECURE DOG PARK

Teddy was a rebel-hearted Toy Poodle, a rascal if you would. If you
